Story of the Winery
Feudo Antico is an Abruzzese company dedicated to viticulture and wine-making. It was founded in 2004 with the creation of an experimental project of archeo-enology in the area of Tollo, in the Chieti province, with the aim of giving new life to native crops, protect a fragile environment, and enhance a sense of community belonging.
Feudo Antico’s project initially focused on Pecorino and Passerina, two “minor” native grapes, whose cultivation had long been neglected in Abruzzo mainly for economic reasons. These were followed by Reds, produced from a cuvée of Muntepulciano old clones vinified in purity, and, ultimately, by sparkling wine, a brave experiment that enabled us to obtain a brut which combines the elegance of a blanc de blanc Chardonnay with the typical texture of Abruzzo’s wines.
Low-yields production and environmentally friendly techniques that do not betray the original quality of the grapes
Feudo Antico’s wines originate in a place where environmentally friendly techniques are not just limited to the organic wine production, but they are at the very core of the entire wine production. A 30-hectars vineyard cultivated exclusively with native varieties and with a limited yields production (not more than 8/9 tonnes per hectare). The company currently produces around 150 thousands bottles, 58% of which are exported and mainly sold in Europe.
In line with the cru philosophy, each terroir has been selected based on its pedoclimatic position and on its best production: only high-density (not less than 3.300 vines per hectare) hilly or mountain vineyards within a well-defined area.
Refinements takes place in the cellar, within tanks and bottles made of concrete and glass – with the exception of a few specific products – which are heat-resistant and thus do not need cooling, while also allow the wine to express its natural qualities with no influence from wood. For organic wines - Rosso DOCG Tullum, Rosato Igp Terre di Chieti and Pecorino DOCG Tullum - fermentation is exclusively spontaneous (only indigenous yeasts), with very little intervention in the cellar and no filtration.
Ultimately, the ageing in amphora, a traditional Roman vinification method which requires minimal intervention, limited to the use of small doses of sulphites. The discovery of ancient Roman amphorae on our sites led us to retrace this ancient method of winemaking, already mentioned in Plinio’s writings. The newly born InAnfora project has already been awarded with the Gold award at The WineHunter Award 2020.

A new beginning
In July 2021 Feudo Antico has moved to its new location, the estate museum, aimed at enhancing and protecting the Roman ruins discovered during the excavation works. The new site, the heart of the Tulum DOCG and commercial headquarters of the company, will host a showroom, a wine shop as well as offices, storage rooms, and chambers for bottle aging and amphora aging.
