Avontuur Wine and Thoroughbred Estate, Owned by the Taberer Brothers
Avontuur Estate pressed against the Helderberg between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, is the home of fine wines and fast horses. The Taberer Family owns the Avontuur Wine and Thoroughbred Estate, located on the southwestern slopes of Helderberg in one of South Africa’s premier wine growing districts. The two brothers, Philip and Michael Taberer, are currently responsible for the day-to-day running and business of the winery.
Avontuur Wine produces a large range of wines, some premiere range vintages are not released if high quality standards are not met.
The Winery’s Emphasis is Mainly on Quality Rather than Quantity
The main varieties of grapes they grow are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage and Petit Verdot. The best grapes go into the production of their high-quality red, white, rose, and sparkling wines. The winery produces various ranges of wine for their customers. Their Estate range of wines pair excellent quality with affordable prices. Minimal quantities of the Premiere Range wines are produced, some vintages are not released if they do not meet their high quality standards. These wines are named individually after their racehorses.
Horses and Dining on this Incredible Wine Property
Also located on the estate grounds among their vineyards is the Avontuur Thoroughbred Horse Farm which emphasizes quality rather than the quantity. They house two of the country’s best-known stud horses in South Africa, Oratorio and Var. Their racehorses are valued all over the world and are sold anually at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in January, the National Yearling Sale in April, and at the Durbanville Sale in March. The farm also holds a premier Avontuur Estate Restaurant that has a cozy fireplace for the winters and a viewing terrace for the summers.
