Organic Grape Farmers Since 1955 in California
Welcome to Barra of Mendocino
Founded by Charlie Barra in the picturesque Mendocino County, Barra of Mendocino has deep roots in grape farming. Charlie began cultivating grapes in the mid-1940s, inspired by his father Antonio and his grandfather Giuseppe Rovera, who immigrated from Piedmont, Italy, in 1906. In 1954, he acquired Redwood Valley Vineyards, which now spans over 265 acres of organically grown grapes, including Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Muscat Canelli.
The Mendocino Appellation
Located at the bench lands of the Russian River's headwaters, our vineyard benefits from hot summer days averaging 90°F and cool nights that can drop 30°F. This temperature variation allows our grapes to mature slowly and evenly, resulting in wines with exceptional flavor and texture. Mendocino County is known for its fruit-forward wines, and we take pride in producing some of the finest yet-to-be-discovered selections in the market.
Organic Certification
At Barra of Mendocino, we are committed to organic farming practices. Our grapes are cultivated without conventional pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or bioengineering. We plant cover crops like bell beans, red clover, peas, and vetch between the vine rows. As these plants mature, they enrich the soil, providing essential nutrients for our vines. This approach fosters a thriving ecosystem of microorganisms that enhance nutrient absorption, ensuring our grapes are of the highest quality.
