Bodega Encima winery: close to Camino de Santiago
Bodega Encima Wines is a winery situated in the beautiful village of Molinaseca, Spain, located on the famous Camino de Santiago. Though the winery is recently established, it was founded on a long and rich family tradition.
Following the footsteps of the grandfather
Benito Otero, grandfather of the current winemaker, began making wine in the 1940s and opened a winery called La Bóveda, in the old synagogue of Ponferrada. His son, Lolo, carried on the family tradition for another generation, establishing a winery with a larger capacity. Manuel Benito Otero, his son, was named after his grandfather when he was born in 1968. Manuel grew up and inherited the family love for wine, studying viticulture and Oenology in Requena, Valencia and joining the family business in 1991.
In 2003 the need to develop a new production center gave birth to Bodega Encima Wines, a beautiful modern facility in Molinaseca surrounded by idyllic scenery
Excellent wines from the Bierzo DO
The vineyards of the Otero family fall under the DO Bierzo appellation, a division that Lolo Otero himself promoted with other local wine growers in 1988. The region is characterized by a unique microclimate well suited for viticulture. The Othero family’s vines are planted between an altitude of 600 and 650 m in soils with a mix of slate and clay. They grow varieties such as Menía, Godello, and Doña Blanca and produce white wines, red wines, rosé and more. The 10 hectares of vineyards are maintained manually, completely organic. This way the wines produced by the Otero family are true to the tradition and reflective of the region.
