Bodega Encima Winery: Nestled Along the Camino de Santiago

Bodega Encima Wines is located in the picturesque village of Molinaseca, Spain, right on the historic Camino de Santiago. Although this winery is relatively new, it is built on a rich family legacy that dates back decades.

Honoring a Family Tradition

The story begins with Benito Otero, the grandfather of the current winemaker, who started crafting wine in the 1940s. He opened a winery named La Bóveda in the old synagogue of Ponferrada. His son, Lolo, continued this tradition, expanding the family business with a larger winery. In 1968, Manuel Benito Otero was born, named after his grandfather. Growing up surrounded by the family’s passion for wine, Manuel studied viticulture and oenology in Requena, Valencia, and joined the family business in 1991.

In 2003, the need for a new production center led to the establishment of Bodega Encima Wines, a modern facility set against stunning natural landscapes.

Exceptional Wines from the Bierzo DO

The Otero family’s vineyards are part of the DO Bierzo appellation, which Lolo Otero helped establish with fellow local winemakers in 1988. This region boasts a unique microclimate ideal for grape growing. The family’s vines thrive at altitudes between 600 and 650 meters, in soils rich in slate and clay. They cultivate varieties such as Mencía, Godello, and Doña Blanca, producing a range of wines including whites, reds, and rosés. The 10 hectares of vineyards are tended to manually and are fully organic, ensuring that the wines reflect both tradition and the essence of the region.

An unforgettable visit at Encima Wines We were a group of friends and the experience could not have been better. From the first moment, Manolo and Merche made us feel at home, sharing with us their passion for wine in a close and authentic way. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Risto, the soul of the winery, an endearing donkey who welcomed us in the most original way. From there, everything was rolling: an interesting, enjoyable visit full of curiosities about the production of their wines. To top it off, we enjoyed a spectacular meal paired with their wines, which are truly wonderful. In addition, their labels are small works of art, with a very careful design and a lot of meaning behind them. Without a doubt, a winery to recommend and, above all, to repeat. Thanks for the experience!

I did the tasting with my dog and I loved it. The visit was explained to me by Encina, a super professional and special girl who makes it fly by. She is also very affectionate with animals. The wine is very good and the winery is very modern.
