A Family Legacy of Passion for the Land
Located in the picturesque Valtuille de Abajo in the Bierzo region, Vinos LOF is a heartfelt project by the López & Folgueral family. This initiative aims to enhance the value of the family-owned vineyards that have been nurtured for generations. Vinos LOF is a testament to the family's deep-rooted knowledge of viticulture and their unwavering affection for the land, which has established Mencía and traditional wines as some of the finest in both local and international markets.
The Legacy of a Wine Family
The story of Vinos LOF began over forty years ago when Samuel Lopez and Adela Folgueral took charge of the family vineyards, which had historically provided a livelihood by selling grapes and wine in bulk to local customers.
From the outset, they focused on transforming viticulture to achieve a sustainable balance in vine production. Over the years, the family cultivated seven hectares of vineyards, primarily featuring Mencía and other local varieties, across three distinct landscapes in Valtuille de Abajo. This was accomplished by acquiring and revitalizing surrounding plots.
In 1993, they planted a new vineyard on the hillside of “El Toral,” near the historic “Castro de la Ventosa.” This plot, featuring Mencía and Chardonnay, is the only one on the property cultivated on a trellis system.
Commitment to Eco-Friendly Practices
In the following years, the family adopted traditional, eco-friendly viticulture practices, focusing on sustainable production, particularly for older vines that had been overworked to meet bulk market demands. They prioritized land cultivation and innovative pruning techniques to satisfy the growing need for high-quality grapes among local wineries.
Local wineries and enologists became key clients, consistently sourcing grapes from specific plots known for their unique varietal and terroir characteristics.
In 2013, Samuel and Adela's children, Héctor and Víctor, revitalized the old family winery where their grandfather once crafted wines. They initiated their own family brand, starting with the “La Fontiña de Nai” plot, which produced private vintages for exclusive tastings.
Over the next three years, they completed the winery's refurbishment, equipping it with modern steel tanks and French oak barrels, where their first vintages began to age.
