The Di Ciacca Family

Home to the Di Ciacca family for over 500 years, abandoned over 50 years ago - even removed from the map! I Ciacca has recently been restored and is dedicated to maintaining and sharing the tradition of hospitality, food, wine, and culture of Picinisco and Val di Comino. Obviously sustainable before is now, and will continue to be in the future.

Cesidio's Di Ciacca's father, Johnny was born in I Ciacca. His grandparents, Cesidio and Marietta (pictured above) moved to Scotland at the turn of the 20th century along with many other families from the area.

Cantina I Ciacca Wines

Throughout history,  the unique indigenous grape, Maturano, has always been grown at I Ciacca. Until our replacing in the Guyot Style, vines were planted in an Etruscan manner “al olmo” (around an elm) to allow the ground below to be used for cultivation and grazing - and also protecting the grapes from excess humidity. Cantina I Ciacca restores a tradition of winemaking here.

I did not stay there nor have I been there, but looking for a taxi from Picinisco I called the Ciaccas and the gentleman who answered the phone was kind enough to give me the number of the taxi driver they use from the building. It's a small thing but it means availability even for those who were not customers at the time.

Excellent venue for those seeking a breathe of fresh air away from the bustle of Roma. Good food, unique wine, and the most gracious hosts.

Such an enchanting place! This "young" vineyard with deep roots, has been recently restored by the charming host with the most Cesidio Di Ciacca, who returned to his native home of Italy to transform his family's property. He brought new life to the land also adding to it a modernly rennovated cantina, wine tasting room and cooking school, as well as a beautiful albergo difuso (Sotto Le Stelle) where guests can stay overnight in one of the most quaint villages in Italy - Picinisco. This relatively unknown area is tucked away in Lazio, bordering the two regions of Abruzzo and Campagna. This is the authentic, untouched Italy. And an overnight stay (or more) is strongly encouraged. Cesidio will make sure to introduce you to other local natives as well as the international expats who decided to relocate, making the tiny Picinisco city their new home. Ensuring you the most immersive experience, Cesidio has deep connections and strong relationships with the community and beyond, recommending to you the best things to eat and drink, restaurants, bars and unique tours and experiences in the surrounding area. The wine from I Ciacca is another world. Despite it being a "new" vineyard, their wines are impressive - one is already award-winning! If you are traveling through Italy (or even living here) I Ciacca Winery, Sotto Le Stelle and the town of Picinisco are SO worth visiting. You can lose and find yourself all at the same time in the quiet but picturesque Italian landscape and terrain. It's the perfect weekend getaway or escape from the big cities. And the best way to experience Italy...for real.
