The Roots of Cantine Polvanera and Filippo Cassano

Cantine Polvanera is a testament to a rich family legacy in winemaking. Owner and oenologist Filippo Cassano has always seen the potential in the native grape varieties of Puglia. His winemaking philosophy is shaped by lessons learned from his father, Vincenzo, and his education at the Basile Caramia agricultural school in Locorotondo. With a commitment to pure winemaking, Filippo focuses on indigenous grapes that reflect the unique character of the land.

A Focus on Indigenous Grapes and Sustainable Practices

Spanning over 120 hectares, Polvanera's vineyards feature a variety of grapes, including Primitivo, Aglianico, Aleatico, Minutolo, Moscato, Falanghina, Bianco D’Alessano, Marchione, and Maresco. The winery produces several styles of Primitivo, with variations arising from vine age, terroir, and altitude, which ranges from 300 to 450 meters. Each wine is crafted to highlight the terroir's unique characteristics, aged in stainless steel and bottles rather than barrels, allowing the natural flavors of the grapes to shine. All wines are produced organically, utilizing modern technology to enhance the winemaking process.

A Historic Winery in a Scenic Setting

Located between Acquaviva delle Fonti and Gioia del Colle, Cantine Polvanera is surrounded by a stunning landscape of vineyards, traditional stone walls, and downy oak trees. At the heart of the winery stands a historic Apulian stone house (masseria) from the 1820s, which inspired the name "Polvanera," meaning "black dust." The wines are crafted and stored in a unique cellar, dug seven meters deep into the region's limestone rock, ensuring optimal conditions for aging.

A beautiful reality in the winemaking of our territory. They guided us through the tasting of the wines and some products from Murgia with great kindness, professionalism and above all passion.

This was our first wine tasting in Puglia and we were utterly mesmerized by it. Although we had a light lunch, we were all very full after that. The team spoke good English and were extremely kind and hospitable, which made us feel comfortable immediately. Before we left, we bought 12 bottles of wine from them. That is concrete testimony of how impressed were were by their wines. Would highly recommend.

Charming location surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The ideal place to spend days in contact with nature, but also evenings in company with a balanced combination of food, music and excellent wines.

Exceptional experience, tour of the vineyards and the cellar + tasting and lunch. Pasquale, the sommelier who followed us, was fantastic, a super prepared and helpful guy, he explained to us in a clear and simple way the characteristics of the wines and made many interesting excursions, he was definitely an important added value. He answered all our questions and was able to advise us well. The wines were really good as well as the lunch with local products. The place is really beautiful and well-kept. Absolutely recommended.

A wonderful experience in the Puglia region. We had a wonderful guide take us down into the cellar to see the wines. Afterwards we had a light lunch with wine tasting. Their Primitivo #17 was really delightful. Enjoyed their dessert wine so much, I purchased a case to send back to me in the states.
