Castello di Spessa – A Perfect Holiday Destination for Wine Lovers
Castello di Spessa is a historical winery immersed in the countryside, in the heart of Collio Goriziano. The medieval wine cellars and vineyards are located across the fertile terroirs of Friuli Venezia Giulia. A Military Bunker, discovered in the late 80s, is situated 18 meters under the ground, where the Pali family store its fine vintages for aging and refining. The place is an ideal holiday destination for history lovers and wine enthusiasts.
Surrounded by pines, olive groves, and mesmerizing gardens, the vineyard region enjoys pedoclimate and lush terroirs, perfect for grape cultivation. The Pali family grows a massive range of grapes, including Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay. On some plots, the estate cultivates high-quality Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Nero, Collio Bianco, and Collio Rosso.
A Winery with Fascinating History
Originally established in the 13th century, Castello si Spessa was the home of the well-known Friulian aristocracy, such as Dorinbergo and Rassauer. One of the families, Della Torre Valsàssina, Charlemagne’s descendants, ruled the castle for over three centuries. Over the years, the manor house was the favorite tourist spot for librettists, writers, adventures, and more. Finally, in 1987, the castle and the surrounding agricultural land were taken over by the Pali family, who began their wine production journey in Italy’s renowned wine regions.
Wine Resort, Sports, and Wellness
The castle consists of 15 impeccable apartments, well-furnished in Venetian style with the hue of 18th and 19th centuries designs. Castello di Spessa Winery lies within the resort, along with the Casanova Wine Shop, a golf field with 18 holes, a gourmet restaurant – La Tavernetta al Castello, and a small café – Hosteria del Castello. Guests are welcome to spend quality time in all the above places during their wine tasting journey.
