A Legacy of Winemaking in Friuli-Venezia Giulia Since 1928
The Origins of Ca' Tullio Winery: A Legacy Since 1928
Ca' Tullio winery has roots that trace back to the late 19th century, but it was in 1928 that the Tullio family transformed it into a thriving winemaking estate. The winery became a cornerstone of the Aquileia community, employing many local families and contributing significantly to the region's economy.
Viticulture and Winemaking
The winery's historic four-level building originally served as a storage facility for fruits, vegetables, and Kober selection grape rootstocks, as well as grains and tobacco. A unique heating system using embers and metal sheets was employed to dry tobacco leaves, which were then hung in long rows. In 1990, Mr. Walter Calligaris acquired the property and established it as a winery. Today, the Calligaris family, including son Paolo and grandsons Giacomo and Emanuele, continue the family tradition of winemaking.
Location and Terroir
Situated in a region rich in tradition, Ca' Tullio benefits from diverse terroirs that enhance the quality of its wines. The winery features a blend of traditional materials like wood and brick, complemented by a striking burnished steel structure, making it a notable example of industrial archaeology in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Recognized by the regional tourist board, Turismo FVG, Ca' Tullio is listed as one of the must-visit sites in the area.
Unique Microclimates
The DOC Friuli Aquileia region enjoys a favorable microclimate, shielded by the Julian Alps from cold northern winds, while the Adriatic Sea moderates temperatures, ensuring optimal growing conditions. Similarly, the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali area features hills with unique pedoclimatic conditions, where native vines have thrived for generations, producing exceptional quality wines.
At Ca' Tullio, we cultivate native grape varieties, harnessing the rich history and unique characteristics of our land to create wines that reflect the essence of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
