Château Plat Faisant, Third Generation of Talented Winemakers
Serge Bessières is the third generation in his family who manages the winemaking at Château Plat Faisant. He runs the winery with his wife, Caroline, and the talented and passionate team at Château Plat Faisant. This wine estate is in the countryside of Les Roques, to the west of the city of Cahors. They have 18 hectares of hillside vineyards which are based on a clay-limestone soil and face south positively influencing the growth of the vines.
Perfect Location between the Atlantic and Mediterranean Coasts
The wines at Château Plat Faisant are produced under the Cahors appellation. In the Cahors, appellation winegrowers concentrate mostly on Malbec, but some also grow Tannat and Merlot vines. Cahors is special because the winemakers use neither Cabernet Sauvignon nor Cabernet Franc, unlike other wine areas in the southwest. The area is about 130 kilometers from both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. This means the climate has mixed influences. It is sunnier than the Bordeaux region to the east, which is more beneficial for Malbec grapes. There is less rain than on the coast, which means that Château Plat Faisant’s vineyards do not need to be sprayed against fungus.
Presentation of Château Plat Faisant’s Wine Labels
Château Plat Faisant currently grows only Malbec grapes for both their red and rosé wines. They use traditional vinification methods, wine is fermented in stainless steel thermoregulated vats. The Cuvée des Générations is a nod to previous generations of Bessières winemakers. The label even bears the faces of Serge’s ancestors. The winery ages this 100% Malbec wine in oak barrels for 12 months. The Cuvée de l’Ancêtre is similar but the oak barrels used are new. The Cuvée Château Plat Faisant is not oak aged but posesses a deep red color with fresher, fruity flavor with blackcurrant notes.
