Exceptional Canavese Wines and Sparkling Erbaluce from Piedmont
About Cieck Winery
Founded in 1985, Cieck Winery is nestled in Aglié, just a short distance from San Giorgio in the picturesque Piedmont region of Italy. The estate spans 13 hectares of vineyards in San Giorgio Canavese, strategically located between Turin and Ivrea. The winery primarily cultivates Erbaluce, a historic white grape variety native to the Canavese area, alongside other local varietals such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, Neretto, and Freisa. Notably, Cieck employs the traditional "pergola" grape training system, which creates expansive canopies and requires skilled winemakers to reach high for grape harvesting.
Terroir of Cieck Winery
The unique flavor profile of Cieck wines is shaped by the region's climate, soil, and the winemakers' traditional practices. The Moraine Amphitheatre of Ivrea, formed by glacial activity during the Pleistocene, is the heart of the Erbaluce di Caluso appellation. This area boasts a diverse mineral composition due to its rich silicate and carbonate metamorphic rocks, contributing to the wines' distinctive savory character and complexity.
The Erbaluce Grape
Erbaluce is a versatile grape variety that produces three distinct wine styles: still white wine, traditional method sparkling wine, and passito. It maintains a high level of acidity while developing moderate sugar levels, making it ideal for crafting exceptional sparkling wines with aging potential. With its rich extracts and moderate alcohol content, Erbaluce offers a unique aromatic profile, characterized by subtle scents and a wealth of aromatic precursors.
