Five Generations of Winemaking at Tyrrell

At Tyrrell’s Winery, the rich history of the Hunter Valley comes to life. The legacy of the Tyrrell family spans five generations, beginning in 1858 with a modest one-room hut built by founder Edward Tyrrell. This historic structure, made from ironbark slabs, still stands proudly in front of the winery, surrounded by flourishing grapevines. Over the past 160 years, Tyrrell’s has played a crucial role in shaping both the Hunter Valley and the Australian wine landscape, producing some of the country’s most celebrated wines.

Award-Winning Wines at Tyrrell Winery

The Winemaker’s Selection Vat 1 Semillon holds the title of Australia’s most-awarded white wine, boasting nearly 5,500 medals and over 330 trophies. As a founding member of Australia’s First Families of Wine, Tyrrell’s is dedicated to promoting the heritage and quality of premium Australian wines. Visitors to the Cellar Door can enjoy guided tastings of iconic wines in a setting steeped in history, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts and travelers alike.

Over 160-plus years, Tyrrell's has been a constant vineyard in the Hunter Valley. We found this cellar door was the best for experiencing a much wider range of wines and in the end tried 18 different varieties. The staff were knowledgeable and gave us a good description of each wine we tried. Great value for money. Ended up buying two of the sweeter wines and a port.

A must do, the tasting done by Scott was exceptional both for the quality of the wines, the history and the explanations given. Thank you!

I have been involved in Tianrui wine trade for a long time and never expected that I would be lucky enough to visit it in the future.

Great customer service and I really enjoyed how they went from the easily drink white wines to the reds and then finished with a dessert wine. Definitely recommend, go check them out!

Found a 2006 Heritage Semillon in my friends cellar….bottle suggests in 5-6 years it will “develop gracefully”. So a little trepidation we opened an 18 year old bottle of wine. Magnificent!!! A tribute to the winemaker.

Really great wine tasting at a beautiful winery including a great sunset atmosphere. Zac guided us excellently through the wine tasting, which was a real bargain at $15 per person. Excellent wines and one of the best evenings of our trip!

It was a wonderful experience! Zac was so friendly, he explained everything very well and also knew a few German words since my parents’ English is not the best. He gave us enough time to enjoy the different wines but never left us high and dry for too long ;) I would definitely recommend it!
