The History of Fürstenzellerhof

Fürstenzellerhof has a rich history that dates back to its origins as a hunting lodge for Queen Agnes of Hungary. After the death of "Frederick the Handsome" of Austria in 1313, the estate was returned to the Fürstenzell Bavarian monastery. The name "Fürstenzellerhof" reflects its long-standing connection to the monastery, which once used the courtyard as a reading space. In 1862, the estate transitioned into a thriving viticulture and winemaking center, marking the beginning of its journey in the wine industry.

The Fürstenzellerhof Vineyard

Nestled in southern Austria, the Fürstenzellerhof vineyard benefits from a unique terroir. The gentle slopes of the valley provide well-drained soil, essential for high-quality grape cultivation. The vineyard's soil primarily consists of clay-rich loess and sandstone, which contribute to the distinct character of its wines. Each region in Austria has its own climate and soil type, making the wines from Fürstenzellerhof truly unique in the market.

The Kremstal Wine Region

Kremstal is a renowned wine-growing area in Lower Austria, celebrated for its fertile soils and rich winemaking tradition. The region's climate allows for year-round grape cultivation, producing a variety of wines, including dry, sweet, and white options. Kremstal's location benefits from a blend of warm Pannonian air currents and protection from cooler northern winds, resulting in wines that are ripe and aromatic. This unique climatic convergence, along with its proximity to other notable wine regions like Wachau and Kamptal, enhances the quality and diversity of Kremstal wines.

Had A Great Time At Fürstenzellerhof

In May 2025 nine of us from the USA visited the Fürstenzellerhof in Imbach Austria and had just an excellent time. Ewald, the owner, was really the perfect host. Even days earlier when we spoke with him about visiting Fürstenzellerhof we had concerns about not being able to give him an exact arrival time due to our other obligations. He simply said give me a call an hour before you plan to arrive and it'll work out... and indeed it certainly did. When we arrived Ewald provided us with tasty melted cheese on bread, walnuts, cubed cheese and of course, numerous different wine tastings. I don't know how many different bottles he opened but it was for sure much more than what we experienced at other wine tastings in the past. Mixed in with all of this was Ewald explaining the history of Fürstenzellerhof, how it is a small family operation and the different tasks that go into running the winery. He also gave us a tour of the wine cellar where we each received yet another glass of wine with this one being directly out of a wine barrel. All in all we had a great time and before leaving we bought a few bottles of wine to consume in our remaining days in Austria. I can highly recommend a visit to Fürstenzellerhof to enjoy everything that Ewald has to offer. Upon leaving it really felt that we met a new friend that we all hope to see again some day.
