A Pioneer in Western Australia's Wine Scene
Passion for Winemaking
Founded in 1977 by Ian Tyrer in Mount Barker, Galafrey Wines spans 12 hectares and features a diverse range of grapes, including Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. Ian and Linda Tyrer transitioned from successful careers in the computer industry to pursue their dream of winemaking, aiming to raise their children in a nurturing rural environment. Today, Linda and their daughters continue to uphold the family legacy, demonstrating a deep commitment to quality winemaking and vineyard care.
Additionally, the winery cultivates Muller-Thurgau, a unique white grape variety known for its light, fruity flavor and low acidity.
Dry-Grown Vineyard Practices
As one of the oldest wineries in the Mount Barker region, Galafrey Wines employs dry-grown vineyard techniques and low-yield practices to enhance the depth and flavor of their wines. The picturesque landscape features rolling hills and diverse farmland, with the winery perched high above, offering stunning views of the Porongurups, Stirling Range, and Mount Barker Hill. All wines are nurtured and bottled on-site, ensuring quality from vine to bottle.
Artisan Wines of Distinction
Galafrey Wines produces small batches of high-quality wines, focusing on the belief that exceptional grapes lead to outstanding wines. Their powerful red wines are characterized by rich flavors, thanks to the gravel loam soils and a climate reminiscent of Bordeaux, situated 600 meters above sea level. Each sip reveals the unique terroir of the region, making Galafrey Wines a true representation of Western Australia's winemaking heritage.
