A Legacy of Passionate Winemaking in Alentejo
Overview of Herdade Grande
Herdade Grande stands as one of the most iconic estates in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Situated just 5 kilometers from Vidigueira, this historic estate has been home to the Lança family since 1920, showcasing a rich tradition in agriculture and viticulture.
Focus on the Land
Since 1980, António Lança, a distinguished agronomist and the current owner, has placed a strong emphasis on wine production. He has revitalized existing vineyards and cultivated a diverse selection of grape varieties that thrive in the unique terroir of Herdade Grande, which spans over 60 hectares and produces around 400,000 bottles annually. His innovative approach blends traditional regional grape varieties with notable national and international ones, enhancing the authentic character of Alentejo wines.
Continuing the Family Legacy
In 1997, Herdade Grande began bottling its own wines, establishing itself as one of the oldest and most respected family-run wineries in the region. Now managed by the fourth generation of the family, Mariana Lança, daughter of António Lança, brings her expertise as an agronomist and her deep passion for the estate founded by her great-grandfather in 1920. The winemaking process is overseen by Diogo Lopes, a prominent figure among the new generation of Portuguese winemakers.
