Il Girapoggio- Winery combining Traditional with Modern Wine Making Technique
The Il Girapoggio winery and the Il Girapoggio company were founded in 2003 by a group of wine lovers with the aim of producing excellent wine by combining respect for tradition with modern wine making techniques, vineyard management and wine making.
Characteristics of Their Red Wine
The red wine produced at Il Girapoggio has a ruby red colour and the alcohol content varies from between 13-13.5% depending on the vintage. The flavour of the wine tends to be dry and is characterised by a slight bitter aftertaste that makes it unique and instantly recognizable.
Il Girapoggio wines go particularly well with red meats and medium aged cheeses and are best served at a temperature of around 16-18 degrees.
Their newest vineyards
The newest vineyards at Il Girapoggio winery were planted in the spring of 2004 in Localita Monte, in the municipality of Verrua Savoia in the same shape and style of the pre existing vines, which were left, abandoned for several decades. The vineyards occupy a total area of approximately 10 000 square meters on an extremely steep slope facing south at 270 meters above sea level where the soil is a mix of limestone and sandy soils. The rows of vines are arranged in a girapoggio 2.5 meters apart and 85% of the vines consist of Barbera AT84 and F3 and 15% of Merlot.
At Il Girapoggio the vinification is completely done in stainless steel temperature controlled vats using selected yeasts made in Piedmont which aid in the fermentation process. The grapes are all first de stemmed and then gently pressed with a new generation destemmer, which makes use of neoprene rollers.
