Isolabella Della Croce Winery: A Hidden Gem in Piedmont

Isolabella Della Croce Winery is a family-owned establishment nestled in Loazzolo, the smallest D.O.C in Italy, located in the picturesque Alta Langa region of Asti. This unique area boasts ideal pedoclimatic conditions for grape cultivation. Recognized as a D.O.C in 1992, Loazzolo is celebrated for its exceptionally sweet wines, crafted exclusively from dried Moscato grapes that may be affected by noble rot. These grapes are grown solely within the municipality of Loazzolo, making it a distinctive wine-producing region in Italy.

Isolabella Della Croce is one of only eight wineries producing wines in Loazzolo.

Traditional Winemaking Techniques

The wines of Loazzolo adhere to strict environmental and cultivation criteria, ensuring that the grapes possess unique quality characteristics. Only sunny hills with a minimum slope of 20 degrees and a marly limestone structure are deemed suitable for grape growing. The winery maintains a threshold of 50 quintals of grapes per hectare. The grapes undergo a gradual drying process, with the potential for noble rot occurring either on the vine or in controlled environments. Each wine is refined and aged for a minimum of two years before it is released.

A Natural Amphitheater

Situated in a natural amphitheater over 500 meters above sea level, Isolabella Della Croce Winery overlooks the Bormida River, enjoying southern exposure that enhances the vineyard's microclimate. The winery is committed to preserving the unique magic of the land and its fruits, actively participating in the Protected Earth Project to promote sustainable practices in viticulture.

First of all, thank you Marino for a wonderful morning tasting wines and entertaining us. The wines tasted were all excellent, with a mention of the Pinot Noir. Really great! Definitely worth a look. Yesterday, despite the downpour, the view was still beautiful.

Very interesting tasting, last Saturday afternoon. Fortunately, there were only two of us and we were in charge of the wine tasting. After trying to understand our level of knowledge about the world of wines in general, the good Marino carefully selected the wines to be tasted and gave some tips on how to best taste them and recognize the main characteristics of the wines. The result was an interesting afternoon full of trivia, questions, discussions and conversations around the wine sector. While tasting good wines, accompanied by cured meats and cheeses, surrounded by a beautiful interior with stone walls and many bottles scattered along the sides. Excellent experience that made us feel so comfortable that, as Marino said, "we felt like we were at the home of a dear friend, tasting good wine and having a pleasant conversation".

We were warmly welcomed by Mr. Marino, a person of rare kindness and friendliness. From the beginning he made us feel at home and guided us through an impeccable tasting. The wines, both white and red, were simply excellent, with carefully designed and high quality labels. The passion and dedication that Marino puts into his work can be felt in every detail. Highly recommended.

A big thank you to the owner of the place who showed us his estate and shared his passion for 3 hours for the modest sum of €35. We had very interesting information about the vines as well as the vinification of his wines. We then tasted about ten wines which for the most part were excellent (the pinot noir being my favorite). All this while eating local cheese and cold meats. I thank you again for your kindness and your kindness. See you soon I hope in a new weekend in Italy! 🇮🇹
