Kinross – A Historic Winery in Gibbston Valley Since 1860

Located in the picturesque Gibbston Valley, Kinross Winery is steeped in history, having been established on the site of the old Kinross Station. Founded in the late 1860s by Thomas Kinross, a prominent figure known for his successful gold agency and farming, the estate honors his legacy and contributions to the early Gibbston community. Thomas operated a vital post office and store, earning him the title of the “Grand Old Man of Gibbston.” In 2013, John and Christine Erkkila from Waikato revitalized the estate, bringing new life to this historic location.

We had a great lunch. The food was excellent , very tasty and beautifully presented. We really enjoyed their Prospector Chardonnay. Service was very good - staff really attentive. The lamb shank was soft, the chorizo picante, and the chicken tasty. It was dog friendly so we were able to bring a dog.

This venue is beautiful but the villas are pretty basic. The breakfast hamper is stocked but not with anything upscale. The croissants and the fruit salad seem store-bought. The furniture is sparse. However, the views up the walking path are gorgeous. The free 4:30 wine tasting includes some very nice wine. The bistro was busy with a lot of happy people on a Saturday afternoon, many of whom arrived by bike. They stop serving well before 6 but you can order take-away til then.

Absolutely fantastic spot, went for a Birthday lunch and all the staff were amazing. In particular Caitlin our server was very nice, knowledgeable, friendly and fun, and Rommel was a great wine host and just lovely. Food/wine delicious and vibes on point. Can't wait to go back :)

Stayed one night in the cottages and was the perfect end to our trip to NZ! Parked up early and walked to a local vineyard for a wine and then onto the free tasting as part of our stay, with a lovely collegiate atmosphere in the Gibbston valley! Room was immaculate and the evening picnic was fantastic in and amongst the vines. Hot tub to top it all off. Generous breakfast included in the stay. Nothing could’ve made the stay better!
