Kivelstadt Cellars: A Gem in California's Wine Country

Nestled in the renowned California wine region, Kivelstadt Cellars showcases the rich diversity of the local terroir. Founded by Jordan Kivelstadt, who transitioned from a consulting career to winemaking in his twenties, the winery reflects his global experiences in California, Australia, Chile, and Argentina.

Minimal Intervention Winemaking

In 2007, inspired by his winemaking journey and his family's love for European culture, Jordan produced his first vintage of 125 cases of Estate Syrah. This blend of new-world techniques and old-world philosophies shapes the winery's approach, honoring the traditions of classic wines while embracing innovation.

Kivelstadt Cellars cultivates a variety of grapes, including Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Carignane, Grenache, Syrah, Charbono, Zinfandel, Marsanne, and Roussanne. The focus is on minimal intervention, allowing the grapes and vineyard to express their true character. The winery also experiments with techniques like carbonic maceration to enhance the flavor profiles of their wines.

Unique Wines in a Beautiful Setting

Since its first vintage, Kivelstadt Cellars has expanded production to 5,000 cases annually. The winery aims to create intriguing wines that are both approachable and thought-provoking, challenging the norms of conventional California wines. Visitors can enjoy tastings in a picturesque atmosphere, making it a perfect stop for wine lovers and travelers alike.

The brunch was amazing. The limited menu makes it easy to choose your meal. I was told the pancakes were one of the beat in Sonoma and I was not disappointed. I tried a bit of everything and nothing was disappointing. The green sauce on their version of chilaquiles was house made and smoky. There was live music being set up at 1pm on a Saturday. I had a glass of wine and my friends had mimosa. No one was disappointed

Lovely wine garden. We arrived and were lucky enough to experience some live music which added to a beautiful atmosphere. The wines were good, a bit quirkier and the waiter nice.

Honestly fantastic. Great space, playground for kids, and the food is far more elevated than I was expecting. The pork belly was incredible. Plus, they accommodated our larger group than the original booking without a single complaint. Easy 5 stars.

my mouth is watering just thinking about my visit this past weekend to Kivelstadt. This is a must stop when you’re in Sonoma, even worth making a trip just for this spot. Only took about an hour driving up from San Francisco midday on a Friday. We did the KC Labs and Off the Beaten Path tastings and loved the variety. Gravignon Blanc and the Native Son were some of our favorites. The food is amazing, you have to get the Glazed Pork Belly. The pork is cooked to tender perfection and pairs deliciously with the mushrooms. The aguachile is a bit more like a crudo and was perfect for the hot sonoma weather in September. We spent a few hours here in their comfortable outdoor seating and left with a few bottles. The wine club benefits are definitely worth it, with free tastings and generous discounts on bottles. The service was great, sharing just enough about the wines but also giving us space to taste slowly and enjoy the warm weather. Looking forward to my next visit to Kivelstadt - I’m telling my friends we’re coming every weekend now 😉 Update 10/8: As promised, came back for another tasting. Tori guided us through the wines again. She is the absolute best. Let us take the tasting at our own pace and answered any questions we had. Even provided suggestions for other wineries to check out in the area. We had the aguachile again and loved it. Had the elote for the first time and it was great as well. You really can’t go wrong with any of the food here. The panna cotta was the star though, love that it’s seasonal. Can’t wait for our next visit 😊

Of all the times that we have visited the area we never knew this was hidden behind the fire station. Came here for brunch and ended up doing that and having our first flight of the day. The wines are definitely for those who preferred dry. The food we will go easy on because from what we found out, there is a new chef and the menu had just been overhauled. We gave our critique so look forward to seeing what comes of the dishes when we visit next.
