La Legua’s Tunnels of History

La Legua estate has stood as a silent witness to history for centuries, located near Valladolid, a significant city in the Kingdom of Castile. This winery has seen the influence of Spanish kings, Austrian queens, and French troops, all of whom have shaped the culture and history of the region. The La Legua winery is built over the ancient passageways and tunnels of a historic winery that has endured for three centuries.

Winery Facilities

La Legua cultivates its vineyards across 80 hectares of land, with vines ranging from 25 to 35 years old. The estate is divided into seven distinct plots, each contributing unique characteristics to the wines. The primary grape variety is the renowned Spanish Tempranillo, which occupies 85% of the vineyard. Additionally, Cabernet Sauvignon (8%) and Grenache (7%) are also grown. In the cellar, you will find stainless steel tanks with a capacity of 465,000 liters and 500 carefully selected oak barrels (50% American, 40% French, and 10% Hungarian). The dedicated team of seven specialists ensures the highest quality in every bottle.

DO Cigales and Its Wines

La Legua produces wines under the DO Cigales designation, a relatively young appellation established in 1991, covering approximately 2,700 hectares. While the region has a rich history of winemaking dating back to the Middle Ages, it is particularly known for its exceptional rosé wines. Visitors will also find outstanding red wines crafted at the winery, showcasing the diverse offerings of this unique region.

Typical winery in Fuensaldaña. Restaurant where you can eat lamb, although they also have other well-prepared products. Today with beans with mussels, important potatoes or very well-prepared oxtail. Washed down with Cigales red wine, of course.

An unforgettable experience. From the ham to the cheese, the lamb roasted in the oven so that the bone comes out of the meat effortlessly, the grilled lamb chops and many other delicacies, this will be an impeccable meal. The waiter knows what he is doing in this unique and unusual environment - an old wine cellar dug into the earth, full of charm and memories. We will come back again and again.

They may be more or less appealing, more inviting, or whatever, but there's no doubt that this restaurant, nestled in these caves, has a special and different charm. There were three of us, and we ordered some porcini mushrooms, a black pudding with pine nuts, and some important potatoes to share. All three were simply spectacular. The second dishes were some cheeks, in this case simply perfect, and a quarter of lamb, the specialty, very good. Now I'll add two "buts," but they're not enough to deduct the fifth star. The desserts, in this case cheesecake and rice pudding, were decent, but not up to the standard of the food; they could be improved. And one detail that I know I didn't like, and which will surely be a constant and usually goes unnoticed by customers, is that when you order the quarter of lamb, for which they already charge you €50, they tell you, "We'll put some lettuce leaves in there, right?" to which you reply, "Come on, come on." In many towns in Segovia, when you order lamb, you get a free plate of salad with the lamb. Here, you get €9 for the lettuce leaves and four tomato slices when the bill arrives. So, the question when you order lamb should be: "Should we add some lettuce leaves, and charge €9 for that?"
