Montofoli Wine Estate

Located in Palaia Chora, Karystos, Montofoli Wine Estate spans 12 acres and boasts a rich history of winemaking that dates back 2,500 years. The area has evidence of continuous habitation from the Classical, Hellenistic, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. In 1877, the estate was sold to Ioannis Konstantinides, a merchant of Karystian descent from Egypt, who transformed it into its current form, renaming it Ktima Konstantinides. He constructed expansive terraces and cultivated lemon trees for export across the Mediterranean.

A Historical Landmark

Montofoli Wine Estate has long been a significant landmark in Karystia. In 1841, it hosted King Otto of Greece, who presented the city plan of Karystos. During the German Occupation, the estate served as an observation point. However, by 1950, it fell into disrepair, with its once-majestic terraces becoming a forgotten treasure.

In 1986, Marjory Konstantinides sold the estate in ruins to the Karakostas family, who renamed it Montofoli. Their vision was to restore the historical buildings and cultivate the fertile land, enriched by abundant fresh water. Today, the restored buildings showcase unique styles while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic, with four available for rent.

Vineyards with a Legacy

In 1986, the estate planted four Aegean grape varieties: Assyrtiko, Athiri, Aidani, and Liatiko, aiming to produce sweet wine using traditional sun-drying methods. The vineyard has been recognized as a model site, monitored by the Institute of Vine and the Ministry of Agriculture for a decade.

Today, the wine cellar is located behind the 12th-century Catholic Church of St. Marco. The courtyard in front of the cellar hosts music festivals, weddings, baptisms, and other social events. Guided tours of the vineyard and its rich history are available upon request.

At Montofoli Wine Estate, we aim to contribute to the cultural development of Karystia, making it a cherished destination in South Evia.

A visit to the winery tells a story through time. An informative tour of the region's history. You tour the vines and the cellar. It's a shame there's no history about the grape varieties, winemaking, etc. Which brings us to a winery. €8 for a one-hour visit... vineyard, while there's a magnificent Venetian villa. It's a shame to advertise it and see it 50 meters away. I know I wouldn't visit again.
