A Tuscan Gem Since 1990
From Abandoned Land to Cultivated Paradise
Sassotondo Winery spans an impressive 72 hectares between the charming towns of Sorano and Pitigliano in Tuscany. Founded by agronomist Carla Benini and her husband, documentary filmmaker Edoardo Ventimiglia, the winery began as a dream to escape urban life. In 1990, they moved to Tuscany, where they found just one hectare of vineyard, a dilapidated house, and vast stretches of neglected land. After years of hard work and dedication, they established Sassotondo, celebrating their first harvest in 1997 alongside the renovation of their cellars.
Symbolic Cellars Built from Tufo
The stunning Sassotondo Winery is nestled at the base of the volcanic basin of Bolsena, where tufo, a volcanic rock, enriches the soil. This unique terrain provides essential nutrients for healthy vine growth. The winery's cellars, carved directly into the tufo, serve as a hallmark of the estate. One particular cellar, located at the end of a corridor, maintains ideal humidity and temperature conditions, allowing wines destined for aging to develop a richer aromatic profile.
Exclusive Wines from Sassotondo
Since its inception, Sassotondo has focused on innovative projects with friends, collaborators, and winemaker Attilio Pagli. The vineyard operates as a traditional farm, cultivating vines and olives while practicing biodynamic methods since 2007. Sassotondo is home to exceptional grape varieties, including Ciliegiolo, Teroldego, Trebbiano, Sauvignon Blanc, and Greco, producing fine and elegant red, white, and rosé wines that reflect the unique terroir of Tuscany.
