A Hidden Gem in Lower Austria's Vineyards
Weinbau Rogl Winery
Founded in 2017, Weinbau Rogl is the first winery in Bad Hall, a charming town known for its rich cultural heritage and health resort status. Nestled in the picturesque region of Lower Austria, this winery is the brainchild of Armin Rogl, who cultivates two hectares of vineyards. The vineyard, named “Schmiedlus,” is located in the cadastral community of Großmengersdorf, within the city limits of Bad Hall.
The Schmiedlus Terroir
The name “Schmiedlus” comes from the Austro-Hungarian term “Lus,” meaning a long strip of land, and references the historical “Schmidten zu Großmengerstorf,” which once thrived east of the current vineyard. The sun-kissed slope of Schmiedlus faces SSW and sits at an elevation of 390 to 400 meters above sea level. Historically, crops like wheat and barley grown here ripened earlier than in surrounding fields, showcasing the unique microclimate of the area.
Schmiedlus enjoys warm days and cool nights, complemented by a gentle breeze that sweeps through the vines year-round. This climate contributes to the health of the grapes, resulting in wines with vibrant fruity aromas and exceptional quality. Whether you are a wine enthusiast or a traveler seeking authentic experiences, Weinbau Rogl offers a glimpse into the heart of Austrian winemaking.
