Hans Igler Winery: A Legacy of Red Wine Excellence

Located in the renowned red wine region of Burgenland, Weingut Hans Igler has been a cornerstone of Austrian viticulture since the 1960s. Founded by Hans Igler, a pioneer in red winemaking, the winery specializes in the distinctive Blaufränkisch grape, which embodies the unique character of this eastern Austrian terroir.

Continuing the Family Tradition

Today, the winery is led by Waltraud Reisner-Igler, her husband Wolfgang, and their son Clemens along with his wife Anna. Together, they strive to perfect the art of Blaufränkisch. Their commitment to quality is evident in their celebrated wines, such as the “Vulcano,” which commemorates its 30th anniversary with the 2017 vintage, and the robust “Biiri,” crafted over the past 14 years. The “Ab Ericio” also stands out, reaching its 19th year with the 2017 vintage.

The winery's finest vineyards, known as Biiri, are situated 250 meters above sea level, showcasing the region's rich heritage.

Exceptional Wines with Distinctive Flavors

The unique climate and clay-rich soils of Burgenland create an ideal environment for vine cultivation. Spanning 60 hectares, the estate primarily focuses on red grape varieties, including Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Merlot, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and St. Laurent. The grapes are meticulously handpicked to ensure the highest quality, resulting in wines that are rich in flavor and aroma. With extensive experience in viticulture, the winemakers at Hans Igler Winery harvest at the optimal time, allowing the wines to reflect the true essence of their region.

Attractive wine celar with a shop and space under roof for special events, meetings. The owners are very attentive, love to tell the story behind their wines and relatin with a painter who made the lovely labels for the bottles. Red wines are the best.

Friendly people. I came from them to pick up one pallet of wine on a truck. You drive under prohibited signs because there are no other options. But at this point I was told to go to the center of the town and pick up one pallet there, here are the coordinates. 47.6003573, 16.6292939. I stood about 200 meters from this building and they brought me a pallet on a square.

Wine tasting on February 29, 2024. Beautiful location - perfect for events. Very friendly and, above all, competently led wine tasting by Clemens. Top-notch wine series - to demonstrate the potential of his wines, he also presented matured wines. It was very nice - highly recommended!!!

Excellent wines in or from an idyllic area with a uniquely harmonious atmosphere. Highly recommended - we would love to come back! The Hans Igler winery is located on the edge of Austria just before the Hungarian border and the farm is considered a red wine pioneer in Deutschkreuz. The Igler family has been cultivating their vines on an impressive 35ha of cultivated land for the third generation and not only pays attention to the highest quality but also to sustainability. The beautiful courtyard, which is also used as an event location for weddings or seminars, is a very special property because of the wine cellar. This was built between 1908 and 1910 and consists of a Zollinger lamella roof, of which there are only 3 left in the world. The “wine cellar” is 70m long and 10m high! By collecting rainwater along the house, resources are conserved. Now to the most important thing: the red wine! In addition to the Vulcano, the farm is best known for its Ab Ericio, which is Latin and means hedgehog. The wines are well suited to be stored in a wine cooler for a few years so that they become a little more ripe. Personally, I also liked the St. Laurent and the Ricciolino particularly well and these can be purchased from the farm for 8-10 euros per bottle. All in all, I really liked the farm, the ambience and, last but not least, the wine. Full 5 stars and a visit recommendation.
