A Family Winery Crafting Authentic Austrian Wines
Umathum Winery: A Legacy of Traditional Winemaking
Located in the picturesque Burgenland region, Weingut Umathum is a family-owned winery renowned for its commitment to traditional winemaking. The estate specializes in crafting wines with moderate alcohol levels, showcasing the unique flavors of local grape varieties. Owner Josef Umathum is particularly known for his exceptional red wines, as well as the remarkable Rosé Saignée, which has made a significant mark in the wine world. Since 2005, the winery has embraced organic and biodynamic farming practices inspired by Rudolf Steiner, focusing on sustainability and environmental preservation. While they do not label their wines as organic, this philosophy is integral to their winemaking approach, ensuring the health of their vines and the surrounding ecosystem.
Reviving Austria's Unique Grape Varieties
The winery's prime vineyards, located in Vom Stein, Ried Hallebuhl, and Kirschgarten, benefit from an ideal microclimate, rich soil, and balanced rainfall, making them perfect for vine cultivation. Under the guidance of Helmut Gangl, the winery is dedicated to reviving forgotten Austrian grape varieties. Handpicked grapes are carefully processed in the winery, with aging occurring in traditional wooden barrels, which enhances the wines' distinctive flavors and aromas. The estate cultivates a diverse range of grape varieties, including Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Harslevelü, Gelber Muskateller, and Welschriesling. After approximately three years of aging, their exceptional red, white, rosé, and dessert wines are ready for release, showcasing the true essence of Burgenland's terroir.
