Umathum Winery, a Family Estate Making Traditional and Tasty Wines
The Umathum winery is present in the Burgenland region and is a classic family estate making traditional and tasty wines with moderate alcohol levels. The local grape varieties are used to make authentic red wines. The owner Josef Umathum also makes white wines like the special Rose Saignee that made wine history. In 2005, the company decided to follow the guidelines of organic, dynamic agriculture and followed the ideas and foundations of Rudolf Steiner. They do not label their wines as organic because it is their way of life. Their wines have a great style, structure, elegance and taste. The use of organic agriculture allows them to preserve the environment, biodiversity and the health of their vines for future use.
The Revival of Forgotten Austrian Grape Varieties
Their best vineyards are present in Vom Stein, Ried Hallebuhl and Kirschgarten. The workers follow the rhythm of nature and use the oldest, most reliable vineyards. Helmut Gangl helps as a supervisor in the revival of forgotten Austrian grape varieties. The region has a perfect microclimate, soil, temperature and rainfall for the cultivation of vines. The grapes are handpicked by the workers and processed in the winery. Ageing takes place in traditional wood barrels and allows their wines to attain their characteristic taste and aroma. The main grape varieties that grow in their estate are Blaufränkisch, St.Laurent, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon blanc, Traminer, Harszlevelü, Gelber Muskateller and Welschriesling. The best grapes are used to make their famous red, white, rose and dessert wines. The wines are sold after around three years at the winery.
