Winery Tement: in the heart of Styria
The winery Tement was born in 1959 and was started by Joseph and Edina Tement with two hectares of vines. The vineyards “Zieregg” and “Grassnitzberg” were to the left and right sides of the house. The starting point of the winery was a set-up of traditional Styrian wine tavern. In 1976, after the death of Joseph, their son Manfred took over the winery.
The international break-through
In 1991, they received an international break when a German Magazine Der Feinschmecker selected their Sauvignon blanc as the world’s best Sauvignon blanc. Besides that, the grape varieties produced in their vineyards are Morillon, Gelber Muskateller, Welschriesling, Weissburgunder, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt.
The winery grew in 1999 with a new cellar built in Zieregg. It was in 2008, they had begun to work on the principle of organic agriculture and the first 10 hectares were turned into 100% biological cultivation. The same year a new winery Domaine Ciringa was born. In 2010, the father-son duo formed in 2003 was joined by the younger son, making the winemaker trio. In 2012, Heidi opened her dream project Winazrei-chalets on Zieregg.
Following organic principles in winemaking
The 80 hectares vineyards in Austria and the 20 hectares vineyards in Slovenia were converted to biological-organic winemaking in 2015. Eight more Winazrei were opened, now in Ciringa Menhard. The harvest of 2018 was officially certified biological-organic and in 2019 the vineyards in Slovenia followed the same path. In 2019 the international jury of “50 best vineyards of the world” selects the winery Tement as the 15th most worth visiting winery in the world.
At present, they produce red, white and rose wine exclusively of Südsteiermark appellation with the same zeal and passion as that of their grandfather
