Northern Macedonia Wine Regions: The Complete Guide

Wine has been cultivated in North Macedonia since ancient times, and Macedonian wines were already a sought-after and precious luxury at that time.

Wine is produced here in many variations - from dry to sweet, from red to rosé to white and sparkling wines from the Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. The autochthonous red Vranec grape variety is vinified as a single variety or blended with the international grape varieties to form a cuvée. Viticulture in North Macedonia, like in neighbouring countries, has a long tradition. The climate in North Macedonia is mixed Mediterranean-continental, the vineyards cover more than 22,000 hectares. 80% of the vineyards are planted with red wine varieties, in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, especially with local varieties such as Vranec, Prokupac, and Kratosija. The white grape varieties are the Serbian Smederevka, Žilavka from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Welschriesling as well as some Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The winegrowing regions in which "Vrvno Vino" with the controlled designation of origin is produced are divided into 3 regions: Povardarie (Vardar Valley), Pčinja-Osogovo and Pelagonija-Polog.
