Crafting European Inspired Wines in the Boutique Urban Winery

The journey of Adega Northwest started in 2014 when winemaker Bradford Cowin and his mother Tana Mendes Bidewell, decided to open a winery dedicated to handcrafted wines from the Pacific Northwest that were influenced by European wines. The winery was named Adega Northwest in honor of his grandfather and the family's Portuguese roots (Portuguese for wine cellar). Located in Portland, Oregon, Adega Northwest is a flourishing winery that is run by Cowin and his business partner Darren Harris.

From the Collection of Eleven Vineyards

The grapes used in this winery are sourced from eleven of the finest vineyards in Washington State and Oregon. Alvarinho (Albarino), Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre), Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Souzao, and Graciano are among the wines produced by the winery, all inspired by the European wines. The varieties of grape that are sourced by Adega come from different parts of the estate, all having different terroir and soil characteristics. The wines of Adega are finely handcrafted with much passion and dedication to producing marvelous wines that can be enjoyed in any season.

If you like different styles of wine at high quality, try out this boutique winery in the Brooklyn neighborhood. They mainly specialize in cabs and some Portuguese varieties, but they do everything from Malbec to Chardonnay. It’s all top quality and the owner is super knowledgeable and passionate. A real find.

We found Adega Northwest because of their membership in PDX Urban Wineries, an association of Portland winemakers supporting each other. Adega is a true Urban production facility, with a few high top tables for tasting and a lot of barrels for the actual making of what you're drinking. The wines are inspired by European varietals, and are mostly reds. A very happy exception is an Alvarinho/Albarino, a white wine most often found in NW Spain, in the Rias Baixas area of Galicia. The reds will all sound more familiar. After a tasting, the biggest challenge was narrowing down the list of which bottles would be coming home with us. There were no wrong answers. Their hours are mostly just weekends and by appointment, and I'd suggest checking the website and calling ahead, as it is very much a working winery and not just a tasting room.
