Basilio Izquierdo is a prominent figure in the Spanish wine industry, having spent 32 years as the head winemaker at CVNE, a highly respected brand in Rioja. In 2007, he established Bodegas Basilio Izquierdo with a vision to craft wines that reflect a modern interpretation of Rioja. His mission focuses on sourcing grapes from unique vineyards that are over 40 years old, utilizing his four decades of expertise to create exceptional wines. This dedication has led to the creation of the “Basilio inventions” label, featuring small batches of exclusive wines that are seldom found outside of Spain.

In 2016, Basilio was recognized as one of the 50 exceptional winemakers globally, standing out among over 2,500 winemakers.

Returning to Rioja's Roots

Bodegas Basilio Izquierdo was born out of a desire to revive the traditional characteristics of Rioja wines. Many contemporary Rioja wines have strayed from their roots, often focusing solely on Tempranillo as a single-variety wine. Basilio aims to return to the essence of Rioja by sourcing the finest grapes from across the region. Each year, he meticulously selects the best vines from old vineyards, ensuring that every bottle reflects a unique and authentic expression of Rioja.

Crafting Exceptional Wines from Premium Grapes

Basilio sources Garnacha Blanca from San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Briones to create a distinctive white wine. For his red blends, he selects Tempranillo grapes from Leza and Laguardia, known for their fruitiness, elegance, and freshness. Additionally, Red Garnachas from Tudelilla and Cárdenas contribute to the blend, reminiscent of the great historic Rioja wines. Graciano from Haro is also included, adding structure and depth to the final product.
