Hacienda El Ternero spans 250 hectares in the picturesque region of Rioja Alta, with roots tracing back to 1077 A.C. when it was part of the Santa María de Herrera Monastery. This rich history is reflected in our family winery, housed in charming stone buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, where we produce wines using traditional methods.

Nestled against the Obarenes mountains, our estate features a collection of historic structures that once served as a Monastery, headquarters, school, and Pilgrims' Hospital along the Camino de Santiago. Our hermitage remains a sanctuary for our patron saint, the Virgen de la Pera.

Our vineyards, planted with Tempranillo (both red and white), Viura, White Grenache, Sauvignon, and Mazuelo, thrive at an average altitude of nearly 700 meters. Covering 120 hectares, these vineyards coexist with diverse flora, including holm oaks and Piceas. We practice manual harvesting to ensure meticulous selection, both in the vineyard and winery, allowing us to produce limited editions of high-quality wines that mature in our barrel cellar, crafted from fine-grained French oak.

Amazing place located up in the mountains next to Sajazarra, only 5 kms from Haro. It used to be a monastery and hospital for pilgrims on the Saint Jaques way. Grape fields and olive trees have been there forever!

For the first time, access is quite difficult, do not drive through the town for large trucks, follow the signs leading to HACIENDA, I think you can safely take a long break. There are 2 dogs on the premises, but they are not aggressive, the staff is nice and friendly and tries to speak English. Generally, wine is loaded quickly, you need to provide your CMR And most importantly, leave the same way you came, otherwise there may be problems Regards

We were lucky enough to visit this winery recommended by a well-known winemaker and it was quite a discovery. For me, the most beautiful payment in all of La Rioja. The views of the valley, the vineyards between the hills and the sunset at the wine bar are unbeatable. Of course, the wines. The fermented white wine is unbeatable and really cheap compared to the great whites of Rioja. Don't forget to try Picea, a great palate pleaser. And if you can afford it, take a bottle of Primativo.
