A Historic Winery Committed to Sustainability
Experience the Rich History of a 15th-Century Winery
Bodegas Casa Primicia stands as the oldest original winery in Spain, with its roots tracing back to the 15th century. Nestled in the historic town of Laguardia, the capital of Rioja Alavesa, this winery was once owned by the Church, producing wines from agricultural taxes collected as Tithes and Firstfruits. The legacy of Casa Primicia began with Julian Madrid, a dedicated winegrower from Laguardia, who revitalized this historic estate. Today, Julian’s descendants continue his passion, crafting exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.
Carravalseca Lagoon: A Unique Vineyard Environment
The vineyards of Casa Primicia extend from the Sierra de Cantabria to the banks of the Ebro River, benefiting from a favorable microclimate. Among these, Carravalseca stands out as an ecological farm surrounded by olive trees, named after a protected endorheic lagoon. To ensure optimal quality, grapes are promptly delivered to the winery after harvest, initiating a careful fermentation process. Each young wine is tasted to determine its suitability for aging. The wines are categorized into five distinct lines: Young wines, Pure variety wines showcasing typical Rioja grapes, Carravalseca wines from premier vineyards, Julian Madrid—a Tempranillo honoring the founder, and Cofradía—a long-aged Tempranillo from old vines. Each bottle reflects the dedication to quality and sustainability that defines Bodegas Casa Primicia.
