Bodegas Horola: A Family Legacy

Bodegas Horola is a cherished family winery nestled in Baños de Rio Tobía, along the picturesque Najerilla River in the heart of Rioja Alta. With 7.5 hectares of vineyards, some of which are over a century old, the winery is dedicated to producing exceptional wines through a blend of tradition and innovation. The family treats their ancient vines with care, using eco-friendly practices to ensure the health of the land. Their focus is on quality over quantity, resulting in wines that truly reflect their heritage.

The Craft of Winemaking

At Bodegas Horola, every grape is treated with respect. The harvest is done by hand, with each bunch carefully selected to maintain its integrity. After harvesting, grapes are placed in sturdy boxes to prevent damage. Using gravity, the grapes are gently pressed and transferred into French oak barrels for fermentation. The winemakers closely monitor the process, allowing the grapes to express their unique characteristics. After 10 to 11 months in barrels, the wines are bottled and aged for an additional six months before they are released, ensuring a refined taste.

The Unique Terroir of Rioja

Bodegas Horola's wines are a true reflection of their terroir. The Viñedo Centenario is crafted from vineyards that have thrived for over 100 years in the Najerilla valley. These ancient vines boast roots that reach up to 8 meters deep, drawing essential nutrients and minerals from the soil. This depth contributes to the wine's rich color, aromatic complexity, and lasting finish, making each sip a testament to the region's history and tradition.

Small, family-run winery. The visit to the winery was like when a friend shows you his house. We were a small group, therefore, you could say that it was an individualized visit, the explanations were not rushed, stopping in detail and responding to our concerns. After the visit we were tasting some wines, accompanied by a great "snack", during which we continued with the talk about the world of wine, without sparing the time of the owners and tour guides. The passion with which they talk about their "work" indicates their love for the world of wine. The next day we visited a large, old winery, and the visit went very well, but the close and warm treatment they gave us was no longer the same as what we found here, at Bodegas Horola.
