The Winemaker

Diego, the passionate winemaker at Cantina del Malandrino, combines his engineering background with a love for the Sicilian landscape. Each morning, the sun illuminates the vineyard terraces, reflecting his dedication to the land. His work emphasizes biodiversity and the preservation of the environment, going beyond traditional winemaking to include soil conservation and a respectful relationship with nature.

Diego's approach is akin to a guiding philosophy, interpreting the landscape and nurturing the grapes as they transform into vibrant wines, shaped by their surroundings and experiences.

The Estates of Cantina del Malandrino

Located at Bagolaro Farm, the vineyard and winery are integral to a project aimed at revitalizing land that once hosted one of Etna's largest wineries before falling into disrepair after World War II. Since 2005, efforts have been made to restore this land, reintroducing a diverse ecosystem. The vineyard is surrounded by a variety of plants, including citrus and almond trees, pomegranates, and olives, creating a balanced environment that supports both the vines and the local wildlife.

Visitors can appreciate the commitment to sustainability and the rich biodiversity that defines Cantina del Malandrino, making it a unique destination for wine lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

They are wonderful crazy people! I went there for the wines: organic, aged in terracotta or cocciopesto amphorae, with Diego's clear imprint. Two magnificent, hospitable and smiling people who created a truly peculiar reality. Listening to them (and drinking their wine) is a pleasure and teaches that even these harsh and difficult areas have an opportunity.

Do not miss this place. Truly it is so much more than a vineyard tour. My husband and I went here as part of our honeymoon. We took a cab from Taormina and took the train back (although I do wish we just scheduled a cab home, when we visit again we will). Cab ride was quick and easy to pick up point with Diego. The grounds of this vineyard are just stunning and the stories/information Diego gave on the visit were really interesting and kept us engaged. When we went to the main house the food and drinks were just perfection. We tried their fresh juice, the kombucha, the wine, fresh picked almonds and too many delicious foods to even name here. It was peaceful and perfect. Diego and Cinzia gave us the perfect amount of privacy while also engaging in conversation. They felt like friends at the end of our time there. The wine was so good we ordered 12 bottles to bring home and honestly we were devastated when it was finished, we want to order more! This experience is like no other I’ve ever had and the wine is as unique as the location itself (I dream about the orange wine we had here!) Don’t hesitate to book this experience, we did it through airbnb but I think there are other ways as well.

We went there for a wine tasting and tour through the vineyard. Cinza and Diego were great! They spent a lot of time with us to share their ways and views. It was really nice to get to know them, would definitely come back!
