Cantina Rota, One of the Last Family Wineries in the Region
Cantina Rota is situated in Castellazo of Reggio Emilia in the Po Valley. It was founded in the twenties after the first world war by Roberta Rota. The subsequent generations of the Rota Family have kept the winemaking tradition alive for over a century. The winery is currently managed by Dario, the grandson of the founder. In the present day, Cantina Rota is one of the few producers with a private winery still in existence. In the fifties, Dario’s father, Benso Rota, purchased an old winery in Castellazo and made it the home of Cantina Rota. The winery owns about 40 hectares of land in Castellazo and around the nearby hills, where they grow their exceptional quality grapes. The Cantina Rota Winery prides itself on working all of the processes of winemaking themselves. The grape production, their transformation into wine and marketing of the finished wines are all carried out under the same management. This ensures maximum quality control of the final product.
Lambrusco, the Fantastic Red Sparkling Specialty
Most grapes grown in their vineyards are Lambrusco and Ancellota. From these grapes, they produce a variety of red, white and rose wines. They have a single still red wine in production. The rest are all sparkling wines, one of which is the traditional Lambrusco Reggiano IGP.
A Sustainable Working Winery
The winery has a self-sufficient and sustainable approach. The winery is powered by their own solar panel plant and their sate of the art biomass system for wood recovery provides the necessary heating for the winery as well as their Agritourism, which is located nearby. Take a day’s trip to Cantina Rota or plan a longer stay throught their wine tourist accomodations. Whichever visiting option you choose, get ready to try their delicious wines and enjoy the fruits of their century-old winemaking tradition.
