Russo – A Winery at the Foot of Mount Etna

Set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, Cantine Russo is located in the renowned Etna DOC region. The unique combination of clay and volcanic soil creates an ideal environment for viticulture, allowing the winery to produce exceptional wines that reflect the character of this remarkable landscape.

A Legacy of Winemaking Since 1860

Founded in 1860 by Grandfather Francesco Russo, Cantine Russo is one of the oldest wineries in Sicily, steeped in history and tradition. The winery, surrounded by lush vineyards, has a commitment to quality that has been passed down through generations. In 1955, Francesco and his son Vincenzo established a small cellar to bottle their family’s wine, with the first vintage, Solicchiata, released in 1956. By 1968, they expanded their offerings under the Etna DOC label, solidifying their reputation in the wine community.

Today, the wines are crafted under the Cantine Russo label, continuing the family legacy.

Tradition Meets Modern Winemaking

The mineral-rich land and favorable climate of the Etna region contribute significantly to the quality of the wines produced at Cantine Russo. The winery blends traditional techniques with modern practices, ensuring that each bottle reflects the dedication and passion of the Russo family. The vineyard cultivates unique grape varieties, including Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante, and Catarratto, each contributing to the distinct flavors of their wines.

With a focus on quality and authenticity, Cantine Russo has built strong relationships with wine enthusiasts who appreciate the rich heritage and craftsmanship behind each bottle.

I visited the cellar together with a group of friends on the occasion of the hen party of one of us. It was a unique, original and very fun experience. We chose to accompany the tasting of 5 Etna wines with a rich and tasty lunch. Sparkling and red wines have a beautiful impact, while white wines are more delicate but persistent. Gina also accompanied us on a relaxing walk between the rows, introducing us to the area, the vineyards and the history of the winery and the family. An adventure that I highly recommend and that I will definitely repeat.

Francesco, the owner, was not only very competent but also very kind. Without warning we came for a tasting and he immediately welcomed us with great availability. We liked the 3 wines we tasted and we also bought them. Thank you very much, we will visit this winery again.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this family run winery. Our visit started outside with a walk amongst the vines where we learned about the typical grapes in this area of the Etna region. Though Etna itself was covered in clouds on this day, the views of the countryside around the vineyard are stunning. The tour then moved inside where their winemaking process was explained. Then it was time for the antipasti and wine tasting. Both the food and the wines were excellent, only exceeded by the hospitality of Robert and Gina.
