Flaherty Wines- Charming Boutique Winery in the Aconcagua Valley
Flaherty Wines was founded by Ed Flaherty and Jen Hoover, two Californians who moved to Chile in 1993 to work a harvest and then never left. The country has an exceptional climate for winegrowing, producing ripe fruit with smooth tannins and intense primary fruit flavors. Over the years, Ed has worked with some of the top wineries in the Chilean industry, including Cono Sur, Errázuriz, and Tarapacá, and started Flaherty Wines in 2004 in pursuit of his own winemaking project.
Flaherty Wines is one of the few boutique wineries in Chile crafting excellent wines with intensity and depth.
Production and Exportation of the Wines
The winery began with 1,200 bottles of a single red blend in 2004 and has grown to about 40,000 bottles by 2015. They currently produce three red blends from Aconcagua and Cauquenes vineyards areas. Roughly half of their wines are sold locally in Chile, while the remainder is exported to Brazil, Germany, Korea, and the United States.
Vineyards with Suitable Climate and Soil
The vineyards of Flaherty Wines are located in the Aconcagua Valley, a semi-desert region that receives less than 200 mm of rainfall per year. Consequently, the vineyards rely on drip irrigation and vertical trellis systems. In 2008, Flaherty Wines bought 14 hectares near the town of Cauquenes in the Maule region of Chile, about four hours south of Santiago. The vineyard has a cooler, more coastal climate than the Aconcagua vineyards, with about 700 mm of rainfall a year. Red clay soils hold much of the rain that falls, allowing for dry farming in this vineyard. Petite Sirah and Tempranillo are ideal for these vineyard conditions as these two grapes varieties do well in arid, rustic settings. The winery also includes a small section of a hundred-year-old País (Mission) vines.
Flaherty Winery is one of the founding members of the Independent Vintners’ Movement (MOVI), a trade organization for small owner-involved wine projects. The group organizes an annual tasting, MOVI Night, held in Santiago in November of each year.
