Viña Undurraga: A Historic Winery in Chile

Founded in 1885 by Don Francisco Undurraga Vicuña, Viña Undurraga is one of the oldest wineries in Chile, located in the picturesque Maipo region, just 34 kilometers from Santiago. The winery began as Santa Ana, named in honor of Don Francisco's wife, Ana. The estate spans 1,800 hectares, featuring vineyards planted with grape varieties imported from France and Germany. Each vineyard site is carefully chosen by expert viticulturists to enhance the unique characteristics of the grapes and the terroir, resulting in exceptional wines.

A Legacy of Awards and Achievements

Viña Undurraga made history as the first Chilean winery to export wines to the United States in 1903. By 1910, the winery had already received its first international award, a tradition that continues today with numerous accolades. The 1960s marked a golden era for Viña Undurraga, producing half a million bottles annually and exporting to 60 countries. This period also saw visits from notable figures, including Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. In 2006, the winery was acquired by José Yuraszeck, leading to significant advancements in winemaking technology and the introduction of the Terroir Hunter range, which focuses on the perfect harmony of climate, soil, and grape varieties.

Tradition Meets Modern Winemaking

Rafael Urrejola, the head winemaker, is recognized as one of Chile's most talented young winemakers and oversees the innovative Terroir Hunter range. The winery boasts state-of-the-art cellars with a capacity of 20 million liters. The cool underground cellars, dating back to the winery's early years, are still used to age their Reserva wines, ensuring optimal conditions while honoring the winery's rich heritage.

Great tour, we visited the garden, vineyards, the factory, the aging barrels and, finally, the entertainment of 4 wines. Excellent explanation from Melissa, who was very attentive. At the end, a visit to the store to buy souvenirs and wines. Worth the visit.

Had such a great time on the Founders Tour. My wife, friends, and I spent a few hours. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and did the tour in english with us. She was amazing for our group to ask questions as well as laugh with. The wine was excellent at a great price as well.
