Smallwater Estate, Boutique Wines in Western Australia
Smallwater Estate is a highly awarded boutique winery located in the far west of Australia. Perched on rolling hills, the Smallwater Estate Winery lies in the eastern part of the Geographe Wine Region, which extend from Harvey to Busselton. The winery is only a short drive away from the panoramic views of Doonybrook – the apple capital of Western Australia.
Winery Established in the Early 1990s
Smallwater Estate was established in the early 1990s. The stone foundation of the winery was laid by John Small and his late wife, Robyn, with the hope of creating a marron farm and vineyards to cultivate contract wines in the region. For over more than a decade, John supplied his grapes to other wineries in Cape Mentelle. However, in 2005, the owner of Smallwater decided to start producing his own wines under the Smallwater Estate label. The first vintage in 2006, the staff produced 3000 bottles of Zinfandel, a delectable red variety.
Hand Harvesting at Smallwater Estate Winery
The vineyards are cultivated with a broad range of grapes, Zinfandel being the primary grape variety. Other grapes include high quality Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. These vines are manually harvested and are used to make great red, white, and rosé wines, along with exquisite dessert and fortified wines. Smallwater’s modernized cellar is equipped with modern technology, combined with traditional methods. They use wooden barrels and casks to store their vintages for refinement and aging.
Enjoy the Family-Owned and Operated Restaurant with Internantional Cuisine
John Small also built a restaurant on their property, The Kitchen Deck. They offer a unique space, overlooking the marron dams and lush vineyards. The restaurant menu includes dishes made with fresh marron and other ingredients from all around the world.
