Sveti Martin: A Family Tradition in the Vipava Valley

Sveti Martin Winery is nestled in the picturesque Vipava Valley, surrounded by rolling hills and lush vineyards. At the top of the hill stands a charming church, while the vineyards thrive in the protective embrace of the landscape. The winery's history dates back to 1880 when Peter Stegovec purchased land and began the family’s winemaking legacy. His son, Franc, along with Stojan, joined him in this endeavor. The tradition continued with Stojan’s son, Boris, and his wife Boza, who expanded the estate and nurtured their passion for winemaking. Today, the fifth generation, led by Peter Stegove, manages the winery, ensuring the family’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Vineyards of Sveti Martin

Sveti Martin Winery cultivates grapes in two distinct vineyard locations: Hrib and Struga, which were designated as single vineyard sites between 1994 and 2000. In 2005, the Tresa vineyard expanded to a 2.5-hectare estate, providing the winery with a rich source of high-quality fruit. Each vineyard site contributes unique characteristics to the wines, reflecting the exceptional terroir of the region.

The wines of Sveti Martin Winery are known for their rich flavors and aromas, showcasing the distinct qualities of their terroir.

Grape Varieties at Sveti Martin

The Vipava Valley's ideal climate, with its balanced rainfall, temperature, and sunlight, creates perfect conditions for grape cultivation. Although the yield is relatively low, the quality of the grapes is exceptional. The winery grows several notable grape varieties, including Barbera, Pinela, Vaebula, Rebula, Zelen, Merlot, and Klarnica. These grapes are carefully selected to produce a diverse range of high-quality red, white, rosé, sparkling, and dessert wines.

An exceptional moment! Peter was not there, it was his dad who welcomed us at short notice for an unplanned tasting, and he received us like kings, with infinite kindness and great generosity. In addition, we shared 2 cases because the wines are absolutely delicious! A big thank you for this very good moment!

We had the most wonderful wine tasting at Sveti Martin. The views from this hilltop village are amazing, and we sat looking out at the valley whilst Peter introduced the wines and provided delicious snacks to accompany them. He gave a good amount of information, didn't rush, was happy to answer our questions, and seemed genuinely interested in our opinions about the wine. We tasted eight wines plus a dessert wine which he served in the wine cellar so we could see all the barrels. Unsurprisingly we all bought some wine, which we are really looking forward to! Thank you for such a memorable experience!

THE LOCATION OF THE WINERY IS UNBEATABLE. THE TASTING ROOM COULD BE DESCRIBE AS "SILENT LUXURY", WITH VIEWS OF THE VINEYARDS THAT LEAVE MEMORIES. AN EXQUISITE SELECTION OF WINES (IN ACTUALLY THERE WERE 10 INSTEAD OF 8). VARIED, TASTY, ABUNDANT AND VERY WELL PRESENTED APPETIZERS. PETER - THE "MASTER OF CEREMONY" - WAS VERY ATTENTIVE AT ALL TIMES AND HAD DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF WINE. AN EXPERIENCE TO REPEAT AND OF COURSE TO RECOMMEND TO WINE LOVERS....... JAREK.

We had made an appointment a few weeks in advance. The communication was warm and very friendly, we were able to clarify all questions immediately. The wine tasting was absolutely professional, superbly organized, very informative and individually tailored to us. In addition to the wine, there was also fresh bread, ham and much more. Everything was delicious. We learned a lot. Peter has a variety of very good wines. Highly recommended, 6 stars.

Wine tasting with "food & drink" at Peter's, in fantastic surroundings! Starting in the "showroom" with a wonderful view of the Vipava valley and attached wine shop, through to the modern wine cellar and "in house" sales, a special experience!
