Sveti Martin, Winery in the Heart of Vipava Valley
Sveti Martin Winery is located in the heart of the Vipava Valley, amongst its undulating hills. There is a church at the top of the hill, and the vineyards are sheltered amongst these hills. The fresh air and the beauty of surrounding nature is immense. Peter Stegovec purchased land here in 1880 and started the family tradition of winemaking. His son, Franc, and Stojan joined his plans at the winery. Stojan’s son, Boris, and his wife Boza kept the tradition going and further expanded the estate to make wines with great passion. The fifth generation of the family, Peter Stegove, now runs the winery and is responsible for its business.
Two Vineyards at Sveti Martin
Their vineyards are present in two locations. Hrib and Struga were turned into single vineyard sites from 1994 to 2000. Tresa, their other vineyard, grew into a big vineyard upon expansion into a 2.5-hectare estate in 2005. All fruit comes from these sites to craft their exquisite local wines.
The wines of Sveti Martin Winery have great flavor and aroma showcasing their terroir’s qualities and features.
Grape Varieties at the Winery
The soil, rainfall, temperature, and sunshine are perfect in the region for vines’ growth and cultivation. The yield of grapes is relatively low, but they are of high quality. Major grape varieties grown are Barbera, Pinela, Vaebula, Rebula, Zelen, Merlot, and Klarnica. The best grapes go into producing their high-quality red, white, rosé, sparkling, and dessert wines.
