Tar & Roses - A Premier Winery in Central Victoria

Located in the heart of Central Victoria, Tar & Roses is celebrated as one of the region's top wineries. Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean traditions, this winery offers a unique Australian twist on classic winemaking.

Heritage of Classic Varietals

The founders, Don Lewis and Narelle King, began their winemaking careers in Priorat, Spain, where they developed a passion for Mediterranean varietals. This experience ignited their desire to cultivate these grapes in their home region of Central Victoria. Don Lewis made his mark in the Australian wine industry by winning the prestigious 1991 Jimmy Watson Trophy, and his legacy continues through Tar & Roses' commitment to Italian and Spanish varietals, including the renowned ‘Lewis’ Riesling.

Diverse Wine Selection

At Tar & Roses, each wine reflects the unique terroir of the region, showcasing the quality of the fruit and meticulous care in the winemaking process. The winery cultivates a variety of grapes, including Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Prosecco, Nebbiolo Rosé, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo. These grapes are carefully fermented and matured in the cellars to create exceptional wines.

Tar & Roses specializes in producing a range of wines, including red, white, rosé, and sparkling options.

Had dinner here last night with Dom as our server. He told us he had only been there for a few weeks but he was so knowledgeable about the entire menu, we would have never guessed! He was great and gave us recommendations that we were so happy we went with. I would recommend this spot for everyone again and again.

This New American-style restaurant was our choice for a special occasion. While we had made a reservation, we were seated at a table right by the entrance, which wasn’t ideal. For appetizers, we had pita bread with beet dressing made with yogurt, which was a nice start. For the main course, we shared a whole fried fish (snapper)and an dried-aged ribeye steak. The fish was massive, perfectly fried, and had a notably tender texture in the head compared to the body. It paired excellently with the seasoned soba noodles. The aged ribeye had a deep, rich flavor, with the aging process really enhancing the taste. However, for $100 for two people, the portion felt a bit small. We enjoyed these dishes with a glass of red wine, which complemented the meal beautifully. To finish, we chose the chocolate tar bar dessert out of three options. It was absolutely divine—the combination of caramel-flavored ice cream, rich chocolate, and crunchy nuts made for a luxurious treat. The food was truly delicious, and I’d definitely recommend this place to friends!

Such a great spot in the neighborhood, not sure how I haven’t been here before! Great atmosphere for a date night, the service was very knowledgeable of the wine selection and menu and overall just awesome. We ordered the bone marrow and charred gem salad to start and omg that salad was to die for. Bone marrow was pretty straightforward but good. For our mains we had the lamb shank and the duck breast. Both were fab but I preferred the lamb shank while my boyfriend liked the duck better which is funny because he ordered the lamb and I ordered the duck haha o would’ve loved to try the oxtail dumplings which our table neighbors recommended but my bf is gluten-sensitive so I will def come back with my gluten-tolerant friends to try more of the menu!

This restaurant has a lot of hype, but I think it lived up to it! We came here with a group of 4, which is the right amount to try a bunch of different dishes. It’s best to share food family-style here. Everything differs in size so some items are just a few bites but some are more filling. The tables are a bit close together but the staff will try to accommodate if you want to sit somewhere else. We recommend out back on the patio for some more space.

Very good food and good location. The music is too loud, which does not allow for good conversations or proper communication with the waiter.
