With over 130 years of winemaking experience, the Brown family has been crafting some of Australia’s most innovative wines at their King Valley Winery in the picturesque Victorian high country. The Milawa Vineyard, the birthplace of Brown Brothers, serves as the primary source for celebrated wines like Patricia Noble Riesling, Shiraz Mondeuse, Cabernet, and Prosecco. This vineyard also houses the grape retrieval and winemaking facilities, where thousands of tonnes of grapes are processed each vintage.

A Legacy of Innovation Since 1889

Founded in 1889 by John Francis Brown at just 18 years old, Brown Brothers has a rich history of winemaking. Under the leadership of his son, John Charles Brown, the winery gained recognition for its willingness to experiment with unique grape varieties. This spirit of innovation is evident throughout the Milawa site, which features a highly acclaimed fine dining restaurant, a relaxed Grazing Menu and Bar, and a Cellar Door and Tasting Room showcasing one of the largest selections of varietals available for tasting. As a proud member of Ultimate Winery Experiences Australia, Brown Brothers offers a variety of engaging winery experiences that provide insight into their winemaking process.

Celebrating Family and Italian Varietals in King Valley

Brown Brothers also hosts weddings and private events in their historic barn and features a vibrant calendar of family-friendly activities. As part of Australia’s First Families of Wine, the third and fourth generations of the Brown family continue to uphold their reputation as specialists in varietal wines and winemaking innovation. Located at the foothills of the Alpine National Park, the King Valley wine region is approximately three hours northeast of Melbourne and is renowned for its Italian wine varietals, including Prosecco, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Dolcetto, Arneis, and Barbera, alongside premium traditional cool-climate wines.

The slow lunch was wonderful, with excellent and innovative food matched to delicious wines. My tip is to stay the night in Milawa so you can enjoy the whole experience and not have to drive anywhere. Our waiter Jayse was knowledgeable and friendly, and took time to explain each course (there were 5 of them), as well as answering our questions about the food and the winery. I would highly recommend it!

Certainly one of the best vineyards I've been able to visit and sample in Australia, even surpassing some of the vineyards I've visited in France! I highly recommend the wine tasting, but especially the restaurant with its all-inclusive service: a meal worthy of a foodie! I highly recommend it ✅ A solid 5/5 ✨

Absolutely outstanding meal today. We have had many family celebrations including our wedding at Brown Brothers over the last 20 years. The meal today was so delicious and the service we received was outstanding. Thank you to Tom and Niall for looking after us and recommending wines to accompany each course and laughing with us. See you again soon Emma and family from Northern Ireland.

The food here was delicious. And best of all, unlike most wineries, this place actually has soft drinks, making it enjoyable for kids as well. There are also beanbags outside, so you can sit, relax, get Vitamin D, spend some time soaking in the sun, and drink your wine all at the same time. If you're looking for wineries and you're somewhere near Milawi, or you want to go to a winery with delicious food, then I highly recommend this outstanding winery.
