The Story of Terre Margaritelli

Founded in 1950 by Fernando Margaritelli, Terre Margaritelli began as a personal project to cultivate and produce wine for his family. At 60, Fernando turned his passion for winemaking into a family legacy, creating a winery that reflected the Margaritelli family's deep connection to the land. In 2000, his son Giuseppe expanded the winery, replanting the vineyards and transitioning to organic practices. Today, Terre Margaritelli is fully organic, producing high-quality wines that showcase the unique terroir of Umbria.

Crafting Barrels with Care

In 1962, the Margaritelli family established a sawmill in France to source oak directly from the renowned forests. Their first barrels were crafted from single forests, with the 2002 Pinot Noir from Domaine Michel Juillot being aged in them until December 2003. The family exclusively uses oak from the Bertrange forest in Burgundy, known for its delicate profile and fresh balsamic notes, which enhance the wine without overpowering its natural fruit flavors.

The tasting was fantastic! They offered us 4 different wines that were really excellent and special. All accompanied by some cold cuts and cheeses to enhance the taste of the glasses. We were guided step by step through this experience that I highly recommend.

This family-run winery is a beautiful reality and is known for the quality of its wines. Production of Torgiano Rosso Riserva and other quality wines including the Grechetto which undergoes a passage in wooden barrels to really bring it out to its full potential. Detailed visit and tasting with a nice platter of cold cuts and cheeses. The people who work in the cellar are very friendly. If you want to try Torgiano Rosso Riserva, you are in the right place.

We arrived at the Margaritelli estates and were welcomed with kindness and helpfulness. We were told the history and explained how the vineyards are cared for and the care with which the wine is made. We then tasted 4 types of wine they produce. The Grechetto and the red reserve are worth it, not to mention the local cheeses and cured meats with which we enjoyed them. Thank you very much!

The last weekend of May in Italy is Cantina Aperta, when the wineries we partner with open their doors to the public. Good friends in the wine industry took me to Terre Margaritelli, near Torgiano. When I tell you that we booked a 3pm tour and left at 11.30pm, you might get an idea of the warm welcome we received from Team Margaritelli. It was a delight from start to finish. Federico, the chef, decided that our little group were important VIPs and so they were treated accordingly. We tasted their white, red and rosé wines with Enrico and even more reds with Federico and we stayed for dinner. I had lost track of the number of courses and the number of reserve wines that came our way. Thank you to Federico and his wonderful team. If you arrange a visit, don't forget to ask about all the good environmental conservation efforts, especially their amazing insect houses, it's inspiring.
