Aligning Passion of Wines with Nature
People of the Winery
Behind the wine there are the people that created it. In alignment with nature and its strong influence on character, we strive with each new vintage to let new personality develop important downs - events that shape character and define wines of fascinating complexity.
Region that Weingut Gesellmann Dwells in
The vineyards of the vintners in Mittelburgenland are situated in the middle of Burgenland, with a total area of 2.104 hectares that stretches from the southern foothills of the Ödenburg mountains to the Günser uplands. Here, the Gesellmann family cultivates 50 hectares of the best vineyards around Deutschkreutz. The climate so important for creating great wines is characterized by sunny days and cool nights, where the temperature curve provides ideal conditions for complex wines right into the autumn. Nearby Lake Neusiedl additionally influences the region's micro-climate with a Pannonian character, which, with its relatively warm, dry, and moderate weather during the year, contributes significantly towards making the region's wines so unique.
Fascinating History
1719, the Gesellmann Estate was mentioned in official documents for the first time. Ever since, many generations have ensured that the knowledge gathered would no be forgotten, but newly defined for modern times. A milestone in the family history - and at the same time, in the history of viniculture in the Burgenland - was achieved by Engelbert Gesellmann in the 1980s, when he planted international grape varieties and matured them in French barrique casks. Today the results of this pioneering effort are deep-red icons: Opus Eximium (since 1988) and Bela Rex(since 1992).
Vision of the Winery
50 hectares is an exclusive size with the clear intention not to supply the world market, but select wine lovers all over the world, with limited quantities. With great care and consistency when working in the vineyards, the basic foundations are laid to get grapes in ideal condition to the cellar in the autumn. Working by hand is the crucial prerequisite for successful condensation. Already in the vineyard talent is promoted; when picking the grapes, not just every single bunch, but every single berry is checked. We then use only the best grape material - partly from ninety-year-old vines, which have lived through a lot and so contribute greatly to the structure of flavors. Naturally, the vinification is not just influenced by knowledge gathered over generations, but also by state-of-the-art cellar technology.
