A History of Decades in a bottle

In 1982 the current Erika and Paul Grosz take over the small cellar from Paul's father Johann Grosz, born 1920 in Gaas am Gaaser Weinberg 135. Paul and Erika quickly began their expansion works and by 1986 added a press house to the wine cellar building, and a terrace overlooking the view over the small Hungarian plain was built on the old basement building. Vines were planted and properties expanded, leading the winery to become recipients of several awards of the Burgenland state. In 2004, technology infiltrated the winery, forklifts, a modern de-stemmer, pneumatic press, and fermentation stand were added. In 2014 the old part of the cellar was demolished and a new barrique cellar and tasting/guest room in the style of a conservatory was built. Erika and Paul in 2019 handed over the winery to their oldest son, Andreas, who along with his wife Denise are on the path to creating world-class wines.

The Grape Growing Terroir of Grosz

The small town of Gaas belongs to the municipality of Eberau in Burgenland, which is located in the beautiful, quiet Pinkatal - southern Burgenland.
The numerous wine cellars/Kellerstöckl in Gaas show that the village has a long tradition in wine pressing. In the past, almost every household owned its own small vineyards and produced its own wine. Today there are only a few winegrowers in Gaas, who have specialized in quality wines. The Eisenberg wine-growing region is one of the most original wine-growing regions in Austria and stretches from Rechnitz in the Oberwart district to the Güssing district. Gaas is right in the middle of the wine region. The wines, in particular the Blaufränkisch wines, from this region are characterized by a noticeable mineral flavor, which results from the iron-rich clay soil and the Pannonian-Illyrian climate.
