The Bodegas Estefania is a special winery that was set up in 1999 when the FRIAS family recovered an old creamery located in the Dehesas village in Ponferrada. The winery became a part of the MGWines Group in 2014. Its main brand is named ‘Tilenus’ after the primitive God ‘Teleno,’ the Celtic God of War, and equal to the Roman God ‘Mars.’ The reason to keep this name was to pay homage to the golden years of Romans in the Bierzo region.
Now, their wine labels have a picture of a Roman coin that was found in one of their vineyards. The winery is known for producing exclusive wines by combining their traditional methods with new and modern techniques. The El Bierzo region that has the winery has beautiful landscapes and unparalleled natural beauty. There are almost 40 hectares of century-old vineyards present here between the Asturias, Galicia and Leon Mountains. The clayey soil is rich in minerals, and the continental climate of the region makes El Bierzo suitable for the cultivation of vines.
Apart from the unique grape Mencia, they also grow the Godello grape varietal in their farms. Their winery is designed according to traditional architecture, and the temperature, moisture, and other factors inside it are controlled. The workers carefully handpick each grape, and they are transported in small batches to the winery. The barrel room has almost a thousand Bordeaux French oak barrels for the ageing of wines. This helps to give their wines a natural taste and aroma characteristic of the Bierzo.
