Bodegas Estefania – from Creamery to Winery in 1999
Bodegas Estefania is a special winery established in 1999 when the Frias Family recovered an old creamery located in the village of Dehesas in Ponferrada. The winery became a part of the MG Wines Group in 2014. Bodegas Estefania’s main brand ‘Tilenus’was established after the primitive God ‘Teleno,’ the Celtic God of War, and the equal to the Roman God ‘Mars.’ The origin and purpose of using this name was to pay homage to the golden years of Romans in the Bierzo region.
The wine labels of Bodegas Estefania have a picture of a Roman coin that was found in one of their vineyards to pay homage to their heritage.
The Winery with 40 Hectares of Century-Old Vineyards
The wine labels of Bodegas Estefania carry a picture of a Roman coin that was found in one of their vineyards. The winery is known for producing exclusive wines by combining their traditional methods with new and modern winemaking techniques. The region of El Bierzo has beautiful landscapes and unparalleled natural beauty highlighting yet another reason to visit Bodegas Estefania. They won almost 40 hectares of century-old vineyards between the Asturias, Galicia, and Leon Mountains. Clay soils rich in minerals with the continental climate of the region make Bierzo extremely suitable for the cultivation of vines.
Godello and Mencia Contribute to the Winery’s High-Quality Wine Production
In addition to the unique grape, Mencia, Bodegas Estefania also grows Godello in their vineyards. The winery was designed according to traditional Spanish architecture. The temperature, moisture, and other factors inside are constantly regulated. Workers carefully handpick each grape, as they transport all fruit in small batches to the winery. The barrel room has almost a thousand Bordeaux French oak barrels for the aging of wines. This helps to give Bodegas Estefania wines a natural and pronounce taste with highlighted aroma characteristics of Bierzo.
