A Legacy of Winemaking in the Basque Country
Nestled in the Southern Basque Country, the medieval town of Laguardia stands proudly on a fortified hill, surrounded by lush vineyards and serene lakes. This charming town prohibits cars, preserving its historic charm and the two hundred caves that lie beneath, where some of the finest wines of Rioja Alavesa are aged.
In one of these ancient caves, six meters below ground, the Martinez family began their winemaking tradition in the 16th century. Perfecto Martinez initiated a new chapter in the 19th century, leading a project that has been passed down through five generations. This family-run winery has maintained its commitment to tradition while producing wines that reflect the unique character of their environment.
The latest generation took the helm in 2002, introducing a fresh approach to winemaking. This new team is dedicated to adapting to modern trends while honoring their rich heritage. Their passion for wine is evident in every bottle, as they create wines that tell a story, much like a timeless piece of art.
Bodegas1808 produces balanced wines that showcase delicate and subtle flavors. Each bottle captures the essence of the earth and sky, offering a unique personality and a hint of creativity. These wines are not just beverages; they are a celebration of the land and the legacy of the Martinez family.
