A Legacy of Txakoli Production

Gaintza Winery boasts a rich history spanning nearly a century, with four generations of the Lazkano family dedicated to crafting Txakoli, the renowned white wine of the Getariako Txakolina DO region. The winery was established in 1923, but the roots of Txakoli production trace back to Jose Antonio, the great-grandfather of the current owner, who initially made wine for family gatherings and local communities from their vineyard at the Golindo farmhouse. Over the years, Gaintza has evolved, blending traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovations.

Vineyards in a Unique Climate

The Lazkano family manages 25 hectares of vineyards and cellars in Getaria, nestled between the Garate hills and the refreshing air of the Cantabrian Sea. This unique environment, characterized by high humidity and clay loam soils, creates ideal conditions for grape cultivation, despite the challenges posed by the climate. The family’s commitment to sustainable viticulture ensures the health of their ancient vines, allowing them to produce exceptional varieties such as Hondarrabi Zuri, Hondarrabi Beltza, Chardonnay, and Gros Manseng. Their careful stewardship of the land reflects a deep respect for nature and a passion for quality winemaking.

September 2024. Review: Gaintza Winery We wanted to visit the Gaintza Winery, but it proved impossible to try at the last minute, without a reservation and in the middle of the harvest season. Nevertheless, we decided to go over, hoping that there was a shop there where we could buy a few bottles and taste their wines once we got back home. Upon arrival, there was no one at the reception as a guided tour was taking place. However, a woman soon appeared to whom we explained that we wanted to buy their wines. His first question was: "Have you tried them?" When we answered "no", he didn't hesitate for a second: taking advantage of the fact that the bottles had only recently been opened for the current visit, he brought them to us and offered us an impromptu tasting of the varieties they produce. While we tasted the wines, he explained a little about the winery, its methods and its history. It was an improvised but incredible moment, especially because you could see the passion with which he told us every detail. In the end, we took several bottles, convinced of the quality of their wines and delighted with the treatment. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend booking the guided tour in advance, because if the experience was already great with this small advance, the whole visit must be even better.

A rare and fun wine from a great, small winery One of the most beautiful things about visiting a winery is experiencing first-hand the enthusiasm and passion of those who produce a wine, those who look after it and, not least, those who explain and illustrate how a wine is made. And the more infectious this enthusiasm is, the more engaging and beautiful the visit is. I came to Getaria, in the Basque Country in northern Spain, between Bilbao and San Sebastian, to discover a wine that was completely unknown to me even by name: Txakoli (pronounced Ciacolì), a white wine a stone's throw from the sea and protected (not always) by a special microclimate that allows the cultivation of this vineyard, albeit more difficult every year. Gaintza Txakoli is a family-run winery like any other in this area: a few hectares, a few vines, a few bottles. Few people working there, with great commitment and passion, and enormous enthusiasm. And our guide, who even managed to speak good Italian so that we could enjoy the visit even more, certainly did not lack enthusiasm and knowledge about this wine! Beyond the enchanting place (we were lucky enough to catch a beautiful sunny day), beyond the interest in discovering an unknown wine, it was precisely the kindness, friendliness, love for this wine and the enthusiasm to discover it that fascinated us. My wife and I have visited many wineries in our lives. But rarely have we found such exceptional hospitality and communication skills. Of course, there was no lack of equally well-explained tastings of the three wines produced by the company. Pure Txakoli (it is made from Hondarribi-zuri grapes, a typical Basque vine) is naturally a nervous and slightly sparkling wine, with strong hints of green apple, with intense acidity and a remarkable ability to cleanse the palate, especially after "difficult" starters such as anchovies and marinated fish. It is a small, rare pearl of European viticulture, not just of the Basque Country. If you are travelling through this area, and perhaps attracted by much more important destinations, it is really worth paying a visit, if only to buy a few good bottles or some good local products in the well-stocked bodega shop. And maybe try some of this fresh and sparkling delight in a bottle!
