Château de l’Engarran: A Rich History

Founded in 1632 by Henri D’engarran, Château de l’Engarran began with a modest house and 9 hectares of vineyards. Henri's legacy lives on through the estate's name. In 1722, Jean Vassal, a treasurer advisor, and his wife expanded the estate by constructing the current Château and a French-style park, increasing the vineyard area to around 20 hectares. By 1816, Laurent Quetton took ownership and began exporting the wines. The Bertrand family acquired the estate in 1924, bringing their winemaking expertise from Pignan. Today, five generations later, the estate spans approximately 60 hectares.

The Unique Terroir of Engarran

Located on the outskirts of Montpellier, the Engarran vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by abundant sunshine, mild temperatures, and refreshing sea breezes. This unique terroir, shaped by soil, climate, and cultivation methods, imparts a distinctive character to the wines. The winemakers at Château de l’Engarran understand the significance of terroir, vinifying each plot separately and often dividing them further to highlight the nuances of each micro-terroir.

Commitment to Sustainable Practices

Château de l’Engarran has prioritized sustainable agriculture for over 15 years, adhering to the Terra Vitis label. This approach combines organic practices with minimal intervention during the vine maturation process. The vineyard employs double Cordon de Royat pruning and trellising techniques to optimize sunlight exposure and reduce crowding, ensuring grapes reach full maturity. Key to their vineyard management is the careful plowing schedule, tailored to each vintage, along with green harvesting to enhance the expression of the grapes.

We had a great tour of the castle with Nicolas as our guide, the visit was very enjoyable, we learned a lot about the construction of the castle and all the symbolism hidden in the details. The gardens were just magnificent.
