Seven Centuries of History

Château des Vaults boasts a rich history that dates back to 1495, with its vineyards, orchards, and gardens documented in the Loire Valley archives. The original structure was built in the 17th century and underwent significant renovations in the 19th century. The beautifully designed French park surrounding the Château was established around 1850. Over the years, the estate has been owned by several noble families, but it was the family of Emmanuel de Las Cases, Napoleon’s biographer, who inherited it in the 19th century. The estate has remained in the family ever since, giving rise to a lineage of women winemakers, starting with Marque de Las Cases du Closel. Together with her niece, she developed the vineyard and founded Les Vins Domaine Closel. Today, the estate is managed by her daughter, Evelyne de Pontbriand.

Research, Tradition, and Innovation

Château des Vaults is at the forefront of wine research and innovation. The winery employs natural methods, utilizing plants and insects to enhance the quality of its biodynamic practices. The winemaking team is carefully selected for their expertise, with some able to vinify without added sulfites, while others excel in tilling techniques and plant growth through collaborative experimentation. At Château des Vaults, the focus is on innovation to best express the unique terroir of the region.

Organic Practices at Château des Vaults

The team at Château des Vaults is dedicated to maintaining ecological balance and preserving natural cycles. They work the soil while allowing it to regenerate naturally, believing that nature knows best. This approach contributes to the region's renowned terroir, characterized by healthy soil, abundant sunlight, and diverse vegetation. The harvested grapes ferment naturally in the cool depths of the cellars, gradually transforming into wine that reflects the terroir's richness and complexity. Natural aging occurs as the wine feeds on dead yeast, resulting in a round, silky texture and a harmonious aromatic balance. Each vintage varies with the climate, adding a unique character to every wine, showcasing the beauty and taste of the region.

A beautiful estate where we were able to enjoy clear and very interesting explanations about the region, the grape varieties, and the winemaking techniques during our tasting. The wines are of good quality, but I find the prices excessive.

I arranged a self-guided tour and tasting via the Rue des Vignerons website. The self-guided tour was really unique and took us on a walk around the vineyard and grounds of the property - as well as the vines we saw some interesting wildlife on the walk. After the walk we were treated to a tasting of the wines. The young woman who presented the wines to us spoke excellent English and explained the different characteristics of the wines.

We were able to visit the park and vineyards of this magnificent estate. A wonderful route enhanced by an exceptional territory. We must highlight the admirable work that has been done for generations to have such a park with trees over a hundred years old so well laid out and cared for. The visit ended with a pleasant tasting in the presence of the owner of the estate. We discovered a passionate and exciting winemaker who gave us the opportunity to taste admirable and surprising wines. We were won over on all levels.
