Idaia Winery: Crafting Exceptional Wines in Crete

Idaia Winery is beautifully located in the picturesque village of Venerato, surrounded by the majestic Psiloritis mountains. This winery is dedicated to producing high-quality Cretan wines through meticulous grape selection and temperature-controlled processing.

The skilled oenologists at Idaia Winery have revitalized ancient winepresses, combining tradition with modern techniques to create wines that reflect the rich heritage of the region.

Rich Winemaking Heritage and Biodiversity

The Malevizi region boasts a winemaking history that dates back to Roman times, with Venerato being celebrated for its Malvazia wines. Oenologists Laderos Vasilis and Volitaki Calliope have embraced this legacy, cultivating a diverse range of grape varieties. They grow indigenous grapes like Vidiano, Vilana, and Thraspathiri for white wines, while Liatiko, Mandilari, and Kotsifali are used for reds. Additionally, they experiment with European varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in unique blends. Idaia Winery also produces delightful rosé and dessert wines.

A Family Commitment to Quality

The family behind Idaia Winery merges traditional winemaking methods with innovative practices, attracting wine enthusiasts from around the globe. In the wine cellar, advanced machinery is employed to preserve the wines' aromas and flavors, ensuring a memorable tasting experience.

Fairly new winery in town but this place is a MUST. They actually make wines using Greek grapes, which other wineries around now don’t do too often. The staff is knowledgeable and very sweet. Their vintages sell out yearly so definitely snag the bottles you enjoy because you won’t find them anywhere.

After making an appointment by phone, we toured the winery. The staff is friendly, courteous and helpful! Rous wines excellent! Plus the atmosphere and space, as it is a small unit and you can feel it. We opted for the package of 6 wines for 20 euros and the plus was that we could choose any wine to taste from those available. That's hard to find! The side dishes were also very plentiful in quantity and of good quality! To finish, we were treated to a glass of the excellent summer drink. If there is something I would like to see as a wine lover, it would be that the selling prices of the bottles were lower, as they would be comparable to retail prices. Of course, this did not detract from our experience and we recommend it without reservation.

Really good wines, the best we had in Crete (and we tried many). The staff is very helpful and friendly. You can seat in a nice, small garden with the view of small vineyard, and enjoy wine tasting with some cheese and bread sticks. Wonderful experience! P.S. Few of their wines are already internationally awarded. But my personal favourite is their rose.
